My favorite part of the novel Halo The Fall of Reach is the whole process of training that the young children go through. They are just 75 ordinary children about age six, but they are the very first “super soldiers”. The military stronghold Reach is the training ground for these soldiers. Code-named SPARTANs, these highly advanced warriors, specially bioengineered and technologically augmented, are the best in the universequiet, professional, and deadly. It is interesting to see how humans lived their lives in the year 500, and how they created these SPARTANs to protect Earth from an alien invasion from the Covenant. They go through lots of training, and I like the obstacle course. They use ropes and swings and other objects to reach the bell. The first team to ring the bell wins the game. The one team that finishes last gets no dinner. They embark on various training missions where they have to work together to survive. The young SPARTANs also gain lots of knowledge in their classes, and they become very intelligent humans as they learn about history, math, science, physics, and more. This is my favorite part of the novel Halo The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund.

Summary

The main character is a man named John (Spartan 117). He was taken from his home when he was 6 years old by a famous scientist named Dr. Judith Hasley. He and around 75 other exceptional 6 year olds were to be trained to become super soldiers. SPARTAN was the code name. After a couple years of training all of the children, now teenagers, would be injected with special medicine that was meant to augment their muscles and change the way their bodies worked. It would turn them into “super humans”. But there were various side effects of this medicineit could severely paralyze or deform your body, or kill you. John and around 45 others were lucky enough to live through the process. The other 0 were too deformed to fight, or died during the injection process. The SPARTANs’ mission was simple. Protect the human race from the Covenant. The Covenant was an alien life form superior to the humans in every way. Their weapons, and spacecraft surpassed the humans’ technology. Even though all of the Covenant’s technology was extremely powerful and their soldiers/ships all had shields, Dr. Hasley was able to invent a similar “shield”-like technology for the SPARTANs. Equipped with special MJOLNIR armor, the SPARTANs looked like Greek war gods of destruction. They were superior humans in every way. They could run over 55 kilometers per hour, could lift over two tons of weight ( times their body weight), could see in the dark, and had lightning quick reflexes (less than 0 milliseconds) that made their motions like a blur. Because the SPARTANs were so formidable, they were able to defeat the Covenants best ground fightersthe Elites. Therefore, the SPARTANs always won on the ground, but every major victory on land turned into a major defeat in orbit. It seemed like the humans were losing, and that the secret position of Earth would soon be found by the alien race. John (a.k.a The Master Chief) and his SPARTAN friends Kelly and Sam worked together to annihilate the Covenant, but it was apparent that they were outnumbered. Even though John was not the strongest, not the fastest, and not the smartest SPARTAN, he was the bravest. Throughout the novel John fights his way through numerous missions, and he is then separated from his friends during the mass invasion of Reach near the end of the novel (thus the title, the fall of reach). He climbs aboard the legendary spacecraft leader Captain Keyes’s ship The Pillar of Autumn and the ship makes a jump through slipstream space in order to evade the deadly Covenant frigates. At the conclusion of the book, the ship comes across the mysterious ancient and artificial ring world of Halo. The adventure continues in the award-winning Xbox™ game Halo Combat Evolved by Bungie.
