“The Organization Kid” writing assignment

In David Brooks’ article “The Organization Kid,” he describes what he feels are the deep goals of the modern Princeton student. Brooks believes that today’s students do not want to challenge authority, but rather follow the set norms of society. Brooks feels that the students have been molded by their parents to act and dress in a certain manner. His article also concentrates on the idea that students go to college not to gain higher learning, but as a means to an end. That is, the students are in college to get a good job and make money. The students are being trained to be “The Organization Kid.”

Brooks also examines his own personal worries about the current generation of college students. He is worried that, today; college students do not sit around and argue intellectual points. He is worried that this generation is concerned with maintaining a good country, but not one that will be great. He argues that this generation will not stand up for issues that we believe in. Brooks also states his disappointment in the fact that students are considered professional students. He feels, as though, the students schedule their time too much. Brooks is concerned by the fact that students are more leery of the repercussions of their actions and words, than in the past. Students are thought of as not willing to buck the system, but rather they try to climb the system that is place.

I believe Brooks views are not only nostalgic, but also pessimistic. Brooks nostalgic views point to Hobey Baker, which he tells the story of a man who would not have gotten in to Princeton by today’s standards. He tells of a football and hockey star, which later becomes a war hero. His death made him forever a hero to his generation, but his death was not heroic. He crashed a plane that had not been fixed correctly. Hobey was not prepared to take on a Wall Street job, so that was he reason for joining the military. This is not a story of heroism, but rather a story of one man finding his niche in society. He felt the students were wrong because they did not fight for the right to have nude Olympics. He feels our generation fights for nothing, but we will be all right. Society will just be less than what his generation has brought. Brooks views are very nostalgically skewed. He claims our generation does not fight the authority, but that view is incorrect. While it is true our generation does not fight for the nostalgic views that he views idealistic, this generation has developed out own views and challenges. These views are obviously not the views and concerns of Brooks. Since this generation ideology does not agree with that of Mr. Brooks, he feels that our society will lose its greatness. Brooks idea of today’s student not doing protest as a wrong idea is a clueless assumption. Society has learned the proper and legal way to demonstrate and influence our governing laws and regulations. Brooks is also pessimistic while he discusses character with Princeton’s dean of undergraduate students. She tells him that Princeton does not build character, but rather develops it. Brooks assumes that the college should develop the character of the students, as thought of in past generations. Character, though, is not something taught in the classroom, either generation ago or today. Brooks seems as though he longs the rituals and routines of yester year and he feels he generation is superior to any generations past or present.
