Another purpose of imagery in the essay is to show the death of the author’s mother. “He then heard a strange sound from her, a kind of muffled chewing noise, as if something inside her were grinding its way out.” This sentence shows Lee’s mother’s death that shows imagery that creates a mourning atmosphere. Introduction
As part of my GCSE Business Studies Coursework assignment Marketing Strategies (London Board syllabus 150), I have researched into the potential opportunity to set up a sports shop in Leytonstone. I have decided to call my sports shop, “The Sports Centre”. I would be looking to sell all types of sports equipment ranging from jerseys to balls to sports protection and trainers.
Action Plan
I have drawn up an action plan so that I can approach the task or product in an organised fashion to help me monitor my coursework and progress.
Business Objectives
My business objectives for the first year is to simply break even and survive. I am aiming to make a good business image in Leytonstone so that I will attract more customers and therefore make a profit hopefully the following year. If I make a profit the first year then that would be a great achievement because it will show that my business has been a success. I am looking to provide a good service to make a good public image so that the customers will be satisfied and word of mouth will spread about my sports shop. Eventually, I will be looking to expand my business and maybe set up another branch. I want to be the biggest sports shop in the market and be of the highest quality. I will also be looking to add new departments to my shop such as a new name-printing department.
Location of Proposed Business
When I chose the location of my business I would have to consider if the environment would suit my business. I would have to keep in account of what my business objectives are. My new business will be welcomed in Leytonstone as I have found out from my survey (see results).
I have chosen to be situated in Leytonstone High Road in Leytonstone. This is a busy road and is in the middle of the town shopping center so this would attract the customers. The shop is large enough to fit all the products such as jerseys, balls, footwear, equipment, etc into it. There is also a fair sized storage room, which will be adequate.
My business would appeal to the younger generation being teenagers and students. At an age of 1-5, sports is a great interest to them and I would feel that they would be the greatest customers. There are local schools situated near my business- Leytonstone High School, Norlington School and Connaught School. These schools have students ranging from 11-18 year old; this category of students is the most popular group of people who are interested in sports. These schools have a strong sports programme so therefore my shop would appeal to them because my shop is local to the schools.
Legal Identity
I am going to become a sole proprietor instead of a partnership, which I was considering but after looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each type of business, I have chosen to become a sole proprietor.
Advantages of a sole proprietor
· Small start up costs- it is simple and inexpensive to start up a sole proprietorship.
· Profits are all kept- I do not have to share any profits by distributing wages to staff or anyone else.
· Flexibility- I get to decide when I am opening and I get to make all of the decisions by myself.
Disadvantages of sole proprietor
· Unlimited liability- if I do no succeed then I stand to lose everything I own.
· High risks- the chances of succeeding in a sole proprietorship are very slim and chances are that I will not succeed because of competition.
· Difficult to raise capital- it is sometimes difficult to raise all the money by yourself.
· Lack of continuity- if the owner dies then the business dies as well.
Advantages of a partnership
· There is limited liability- I do not stand to lose everything if the business does not work.
· Each partner may specialize in different parts to run a successful business.
· Other partners may make the business more profitable.
· It is easier to raise the capital.
Disadvantages of a partnership-
· You do not get to keep all of the profits.
· Maybe disagreements.
· You do not get to make all of the decisions by yourself.
· Resentment that one partner is not doing his or her share of the work.
I do not want to share my profits in a partnership so a sole proprietorship would suit me and be ideal. Another reason why I want to become a sole proprietor is because I want to be in total control of my business and I do not want anyone else to have any say in how my business is run. One factor that I took into consideration is the fact that I am risking losing everything if my business is unsuccessful- unlimited liability.

My main source of internal finance will be my own personal funds from my family. My parents have lent me £5000 and I used part of my savings being £000.
My main source of external finance will be a bank loan from Halifax because they have a low interest rate for a loan of £5000. I have phoned the bank to see if I can get a short term business loan of £5000 over 1 year with the base rate of 4% and an interest rate of 1.8%. This had a lower interest rate than my other choice of bank being Barclays.
Barclays interest rate is 14.% so it is more expensive to take out the same price loan. The total that I would have to pay for a loan from Halifax is £5640 and the total from Barclays is £5710 so the difference being £70.
I will be paying back a total of £470 a month for 1 year. For Barclays I would be paying back £475 a month.
Insurance
I will be taking out public limited liability insurance so that if a member of staff or the public gets injured on the premises then I cannot be held liable for it. I will also be carrying building damages insurance so that if my premises get heavily damaged I will be covered and if any of my goods gets stolen.
What is marketing?
Marketing is finding consumers and their wants and desires and creating a product to satisfy those wants at a profit.
Market or Product Orientated
For my coursework I will be looking to see if I am going to do a product orientated approach or a market-orientated approach.
Product Orientated
This means that I will be looking to be making or selling a product and this would be the highest priority to me and then seeing if this will be popular amongst the consumers will be second. I would not be investigating the market first to see if there is any demand for it.
Market Orientated
This is where I do field research on the market to see if the product will be welcomed there and to see if there is any demand for it. It is to see what the consumers want before starting production
I will be taking on the market orientated approach and I will be conducting field research to see what the consumers want.
The point of market research is to find out how want people there are to buy its product and to find out what products are liked by the public and dislikes. Also to find out how much they are willing to pay and to check the local competition.
Field Research
Primary Research This is first hand information from market research surveys of consumers. Field researchers like street interviewers collect the data.
Examples of primary information are
§ Face to face interviews- this can be expensive but this is a good method.
§ Internet- emails can be sent to the recipients and this method is popular but usually has a low response rate.

Place- my retail outlet will be situated in Leytonstone on the High Road. This is a fairly busy road because it is in the centre of the town shopping centre. Because it is in the middle of the town shopping centre it will attract customers. The premise is a fair size, it is big enough for me to operate my business in and it is suitable for my new business. There is not much competition in the area apart from a well-established sports shop called, “Monarch” which is situated down the other end of the high road.
Price- the type of pricing that I will be doing is competitive. This means that I will base my pricing upon how much the local competition sells their goods for and trying and make my pricing low enough to beat the competitor’s prices and make a profit. For example a football jersey in Monarch is £4. so therefore I will be looking to sell my jersey for £41. so I will attract customers and create a good public image. I cannot afford to take the prices down much lower because I will be risking making a loss instead of a profit, which is one of my business objectives and provide to provide good service. My prices will start off low to attract the customers buy then gradually increase a bit so I can reach a margin of safety and survive. This will be a short-term strategy that I will be doing so I can secure the market. By doing this I will get back the money that I spent on setting up the business- start up costs.
Product- there will be a large variety of products ranging from equipment to football jerseys and jerseys in general. If I expand I will invest in having extras such as name printing on jerseys and I may also decide to start selling sports videos.
Promotion- to help the promotion of my new business I will be looking to advertise in the local newspaper to attract local customers. The cost of an advertisement slot in the Leytonstone Guardian newspaper will cost me £00, which is well within my budget. My budget has a limit of £600 on advertisements. I will be looking to advertise using leaflets. I will be looking to buy 1000 leaflets for £150, which consists of colours. I will have £50 spare, which I will be looking to invest in my business. I picked the local newspaper to advertise simply because it is cheap and popular. My questionnaire shows that the Guardian is very popular and an advertisement in it costs £150 but in the Ilford Recorder costs £150. Because my shop is based in Leytonstone then I am going to concentrate on advertising in Leytonstone.
Also discounts will be given at first to customers and to students that go to local schools so I will achieve a good public image so therefore have more customers.
The advantages of promotion are

S.W.O.T Analysis
Strengths I have a fair deal of experience and knowledge on how to run a business and how they work due to my father is running a successful business.
Weakness My questionnaire is based upon the answers of only 0 people, which is not a great deal. I feel that it is not enough research. Monarch is already a well-established shop in Leytonstone so I will have some competition but I believe with my lower prices and advanced equipment will attract more customers. Because it is a well-established shop and has a good public image the customers might not be willing to try out my new sports shop so I will have to promote my business well.
Opportunity these are mentioned in my business objectives. One of the things I would do is to expand by opening up another branch to increase the profits. A name-printing department would also be opened.
Threats my only threat is a well-established sports shop called, “Monarch” on the High Road. Because this is down the other end of the High Road I feel that it will not affect my business too much so the competition is inferior and will not be so intense.
P.E.S.T Analysis
It is important for my business to consider these factors before beginning the marketing process because this will affect my business
Political I would have to consider the taxation- Corporation Tax. If the tax increases, then my profits will drop and sales will decrease. I would have to pay out more money on the tax therefore my profits will decrease because I will not have as much profit as before. I will only pay a substantiated amount of tax depending on how well my business is going. Because profit is my main objective I feel that I will have a to pay a fair amount of tax on my business because I will do whatever I need to do to survive.
Economic An issue that I would have to consider is the unemployment rate. If the unemployment rate is high then customers would decline therefore I would be losing money and my profits would decrease.
Social I would be looking to have mainly students in my shop so therefore such products as footwear like trainers would appeal to 1-5 year olds. There are more activities that require trainers such as clubs and gyms.
Technological Because trainers are even more popular, there are more styles being created and more materials being used. There are now specialised shoes that are used in specific activities.
Evaluation I believe that if my sports shop were opened then it would be a success because there is a lack of competition in Leytonstone except for Monarch.

The shop is large enough to fit all the products such as jerseys, balls, footwear, equipment, etc into it. There is also a fair sized storage room, which will be adequate.
My business would appeal to the younger generation being teenagers and students. At an age of 1-5, sports is a great interest to them and I would feel that they would be the greatest customers. There are local schools situated near my business- Leytonstone High School, Norlington School and Connaught School. These schools have students ranging from 11-18 year old; this category of students is the most popular group of people who are interested in sports. These schools have a strong sports programme so therefore my shop would appeal to them because my shop is local to the schools.
Legal Identity
I am going to become a sole proprietor instead of a partnership, which I was considering but after looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each type of business, I have chosen to become a sole proprietor.
Advantages of a sole proprietor
· Small start up costs- it is simple and inexpensive to start up a sole proprietorship.
· Profits are all kept- I do not have to share any profits by distributing wages to staff or anyone else.
· Flexibility- I get to decide when I am opening and I get to make all of the decisions by myself.
Disadvantages of sole proprietor
· Unlimited liability- if I do no succeed then I stand to lose everything I own.
· High risks- the chances of succeeding in a sole proprietorship are very slim and chances are that I will not succeed because of competition.
· Difficult to raise capital- it is sometimes difficult to raise all the money by yourself.
· Lack of continuity- if the owner dies then the business dies as well.
Advantages of a partnership
· There is limited liability- I do not stand to lose everything if the business does not work.
· Each partner may specialize in different parts to run a successful business.
· Other partners may make the business more profitable.
· It is easier to raise the capital.
Disadvantages of a partnership-
· You do not get to keep all of the profits.
· Maybe disagreements.
· You do not get to make all of the decisions by yourself.
· Resentment that one partner is not doing his or her share of the work.
I do not want to share my profits in a partnership so a sole proprietorship would suit me and be ideal. Another reason why I want to become a sole proprietor is because I want to be in total control of my business and I do not want anyone else to have any say in how my business is run. One factor that I took into consideration is the fact that I am risking losing everything if my business is unsuccessful- unlimited liability.

My main source of internal finance will be my own personal funds from my family. My parents have lent me £5000 and I used part of my savings being £000.
My main source of external finance will be a bank loan from Halifax because they have a low interest rate for a loan of £5000. I have phoned the bank to see if I can get a short term business loan of £5000 over 1 year with the base rate of 4% and an interest rate of 1.8%. This had a lower interest rate than my other choice of bank being Barclays.
Barclays interest rate is 14.% so it is more expensive to take out the same price loan. The total that I would have to pay for a loan from Halifax is £5640 and the total from Barclays is £5710 so the difference being £70.
I will be paying back a total of £470 a month for 1 year. For Barclays I would be paying back £475 a month.
Insurance
I will be taking out public limited liability insurance so that if a member of staff or the public gets injured on the premises then I cannot be held liable for it. I will also be carrying building damages insurance so that if my premises get heavily damaged I will be covered and if any of my goods gets stolen.
What is marketing?
Marketing is finding consumers and their wants and desires and creating a product to satisfy those wants at a profit.
Market or Product Orientated
For my coursework I will be looking to see if I am going to do a product orientated approach or a market-orientated approach.
Product Orientated
This means that I will be looking to be making or selling a product and this would be the highest priority to me and then seeing if this will be popular amongst the consumers will be second. I would not be investigating the market first to see if there is any demand for it.
Market Orientated
This is where I do field research on the market to see if the product will be welcomed there and to see if there is any demand for it. It is to see what the consumers want before starting production
I will be taking on the market orientated approach and I will be conducting field research to see what the consumers want.
The point of market research is to find out how want people there are to buy its product and to find out what products are liked by the public and dislikes. Also to find out how much they are willing to pay and to check the local competition.

Primary Research This is first hand information from market research surveys of consumers. Field researchers like street interviewers collect the data.
Examples of primary information are
§ Face to face interviews- this can be expensive but this is a good method.
§ Internet- emails can be sent to the recipients and this method is popular but usually has a low response rate.

Place- my retail outlet will be situated in Leytonstone on the High Road. This is a fairly busy road because it is in the centre of the town shopping centre. Because it is in the middle of the town shopping centre it will attract customers. The premise is a fair size, it is big enough for me to operate my business in and it is suitable for my new business. There is not much competition in the area apart from a well-established sports shop called, “Monarch” which is situated down the other end of the high road.
Price- the type of pricing that I will be doing is competitive. This means that I will base my pricing upon how much the local competition sells their goods for and trying and make my pricing low enough to beat the competitor’s prices and make a profit. For example a football jersey in Monarch is £4. so therefore I will be looking to sell my jersey for £41. so I will attract customers and create a good public image. I cannot afford to take the prices down much lower because I will be risking making a loss instead of a profit, which is one of my business objectives and provide to provide good service. My prices will start off low to attract the customers buy then gradually increase a bit so I can reach a margin of safety and survive. This will be a short-term strategy that I will be doing so I can secure the market. By doing this I will get back the money that I spent on setting up the business- start up costs.
Product- there will be a large variety of products ranging from equipment to football jerseys and jerseys in general. If I expand I will invest in having extras such as name printing on jerseys and I may also decide to start selling sports videos.
Promotion- to help the promotion of my new business I will be looking to advertise in the local newspaper to attract local customers. The cost of an advertisement slot in the Leytonstone Guardian newspaper will cost me £00, which is well within my budget. My budget has a limit of £600 on advertisements. I will be looking to advertise using leaflets. I will be looking to buy 1000 leaflets for £150, which consists of colours. I will have £50 spare, which I will be looking to invest in my business. I picked the local newspaper to advertise simply because it is cheap and popular. My questionnaire shows that the Guardian is very popular and an advertisement in it costs £150 but in the Ilford Recorder costs £150. Because my shop is based in Leytonstone then I am going to concentrate on advertising in Leytonstone.
Also discounts will be given at first to customers and to students that go to local schools so I will achieve a good public image so therefore have more customers.
The advantages of promotion are

Strengths I have a fair deal of experience and knowledge on how to run a business and how they work due to my father is running a successful business.
Weakness My questionnaire is based upon the answers of only 0 people, which is not a great deal. I feel that it is not enough research. Monarch is already a well-established shop in Leytonstone so I will have some competition but I believe with my lower prices and advanced equipment will attract more customers. Because it is a well-established shop and has a good public image the customers might not be willing to try out my new sports shop so I will have to promote my business well.
Opportunity these are mentioned in my business objectives. One of the things I would do is to expand by opening up another branch to increase the profits. A name-printing department would also be opened.
Threats my only threat is a well-established sports shop called, “Monarch” on the High Road. Because this is down the other end of the High Road I feel that it will not affect my business too much so the competition is inferior and will not be so intense.

It is important for my business to consider these factors before beginning the marketing process because this will affect my business
Political I would have to consider the taxation- Corporation Tax. If the tax increases, then my profits will drop and sales will decrease. I would have to pay out more money on the tax therefore my profits will decrease because I will not have as much profit as before. I will only pay a substantiated amount of tax depending on how well my business is going. Because profit is my main objective I feel that I will have a to pay a fair amount of tax on my business because I will do whatever I need to do to survive.
Economic An issue that I would have to consider is the unemployment rate. If the unemployment rate is high then customers would decline therefore I would be losing money and my profits would decrease.
Social I would be looking to have mainly students in my shop so therefore such products as footwear like trainers would appeal to 1-5 year olds. There are more activities that require trainers such as clubs and gyms.
Technological Because trainers are even more popular, there are more styles being created and more materials being used. There are now specialised shoes that are used in specific activities.
Evaluation I believe that if my sports shop were opened then it would be a success because there is a lack of competition in Leytonstone except for Monarch.

The struggle to prevent that which is inevitable is foolish, yet with such emphasis placed on liability one could be forgiven for concluding that giving birth should be criminal because it causes death. This fear of the unknown creates a painful and anxious burden in our epistemological subconscious. We have limited options when it comes to dealing with this problem due to our subjective isolation as is pointed out by Sartre. Rational analysis suggests that our life is indeed unique the ubiquitous paradox of the finite and eternal. Should our inescapable situation render us incapable of anything but stoic apatheia, a indignant recognization of nothing? Everyone’s life is full of countless opportunities. All you need to do to take advantage of these opportunities is to grab the bull by the horn and give it your all. Of course, to do this you need a little thing called self-confidence. I never really had much confidence growing up, and then high school hit me like a banshee out of hell. When I realized where I was, I knew I needed some type of confidence to face my fears and survive. It all started the first day of my four year high school career.
“Why don’t you go out for a sport?” my mom asked to me the week before school started.
“Maybe, I replied,” as I shrugged my shoulders and clicked on the TV.
Today I should thank her for asking me that question four years ago, because it changed my life. I was reluctant to play any sports in high school but decided to play so I could make my parents proud. Of course, when I said I was playing football she freaked out and thought I was going to get seriously hurt. That’s the way moms are.
The first day of football was the hardest thing I have ever been through. Being lonely and confused with no friends, I wanted to go home. Wearing the full black pads was the weirdest feeling ever. It constrained my body’s movement so much. . It was in the upper 0 degrees and my dark pads soaked up the sun’s rays like a sponge. I was ready to pass out. They put us through so many drills and so much running my legs hurt for weeks after. The first thing that came to my mind after the first day ended was “quit.” I could end all the pain and suffering and go home everyday after school and be a couch potato. But for some unknown reason to this day, I didn’t. For four long years I went to every single grueling practice and pushed forward. I wasn’t the biggest or strongest on the team, but that pushed me even harder to work with more determination. Playing in the big games with hundreds of fans screaming and cheering is a memory I will never forget. Making it to the playoffs my senior year was a sweet moment that would be hard to top. Now that it is all over, I miss playing dearly. Now I realize what football had really given me, a whole new confidence level. It had built my body physically as well as mentally. It showed off with four years of Academic All Conference Awards as well as being the strongest guy on the team. Friends were made and lost teamwork, loyalty, and motivation were all developed; and it was a once in a lifetime experience that will stay with me until my last down.
As everybody knows, friends are the foundation of high school. You rely on them for your troubles and inspirations. To fool around with and have memories with, to be
there when you need them and when they need you. Without them, you would have nothing. I thought I would have trouble making friends at a new school, fortunately, I
couldn’t have been more wrong. During the first year of football, all of us bonded, in and out of school. We all became buddies and did everything together. (As long as our moms could drive us there first) Then there was the girl stage. Let’s just say I’m still working on that. I wasn’t really a ladies man, especially after I went 0- when asking girls to my homecoming dance. I was turned down three times in a row, but at least I knew I had the confidence to ask the girls out. Then all of a sudden, a huge moment arrived. I somehow managed to be voted onto the 00 Streamwood Homecoming Court. Talk about a jaw dropping experience. I had to walk into the middle of the gym all by myself dressed in a heavy dark suit, (I hate them with a passion) and stand there for 10 minutes while they explained my life story. I know I turned tomato red and was shaking. It was the most nerve racking moment in my life. Everybody on the court was my friend, and even though I didn’t win, I was still happy to be voted on, and also glad that it was over.
The last main event of my high school days was also the craziest. I can’t even explain it in words. It all started when my friend Robyn asked me to be the 10th member in a talent show because only nine signed up. Being the nice guy I am, I agreed. Then as soon as she walked away I realized what I had said, and smacked myself in the face. Having a talent was something I was lacking, and plus it meant an audience, and I hate being in front of audiences. That’s when I began to freak out. Scrambling to find a talent and face my fear of audiences, the date grew closer. All of the contestants had to practice
an opening dance routine and explain our talents three days before the show began. I finally decided to do a comedy routine as my talent, while everyone else sang or played
an instrument. Then the day before the show, they decided my routine was inappropriate and I couldn’t do it. To tell you the truth, I wanted to either punch the teacher or else drop out. I had nothing left. Then the day of the show arrived. I was watching fear factor the night before and it hit me. My biggest talent isn’t dancing or singing, it’s eating, and I had a great idea. It was sick, but still great. Then the show finally began the exact announced time of 500 p.m. The opening dance was a huge success and was followed by uproars of laughter and applause. Then everyone did their usual singing and dancing talents. Then they announced my name. I strutted on stage dressed in a bright white and blazing gold pom outfit, including the pitch black gown part which was a little short. Don’t ask me why I wore that, but I did it just for laughs. I let out a huge sigh of relief when I saw that the stage lights had caused the audience to be blurred out. That way, I couldn’t see anyone at all. My assistants brought out a table and five bowls while I explained the talent to the audience. I couldn’t believe it; I actually was talking clearly and smoothly to a large group of people. Each bowl was filled with an unusual type of food, and I had to eat it all within a minute and a half. The bowls contained the following; five sardines, potted meat (a low quality type of spam), Alpo beef and liver dog food, five icky dirty worms, and five large size slimy goldfish. They started the clock and I shoved everything down, with the dog food by far being the worst because of the cold slimy taste and texture. It was an unexplainable feeling, the crowd was in uproars of cheers and groans, all the girls were ready to run out, while all the guys went nuts. Even though I didn’t win, it was still a victory for me as a conquered my fears of crowds and public speaking.
While some people say high school was the worst time of their life, I can say it was one of my best. My confidence level grew unexpectedly as well as everything I learned. Look out life, here I come. Playing football taught me teamwork, loyalty, hard work, and that trusting friends is crucial to succeed. It taught me that friends get you through the good and bad times, and they are always there when you need them. Also, I learned to accept being turned down, even though it was three times in a row. Without friends, life is just plain. The craziest moment was the talent show, when I learned to conquer one of my greatest fears. Speaking to the audience wasn’t as bad as I hyped it up to be, and I’m glad I succeeded in performing and speaking well. High School is always going to be the biggest confidence step in my life, and I’m glad I learned and realized what I can now do.

Everyone’s life is full of countless opportunities. All you need to do to take advantage of these opportunities is to grab the bull by the horn and give it your all. Of course, to do this you need a little thing called self-confidence. I never really had much confidence growing up, and then high school hit me like a banshee out of hell. When I realized where I was, I knew I needed some type of confidence to face my fears and survive. It all started the first day of my four year high school career.
“Why don’t you go out for a sport?” my mom asked to me the week before school started.
“Maybe, I replied,” as I shrugged my shoulders and clicked on the TV.
Today I should thank her for asking me that question four years ago, because it changed my life. I was reluctant to play any sports in high school but decided to play so I could make my parents proud. Of course, when I said I was playing football she freaked out and thought I was going to get seriously hurt. That’s the way moms are.
The first day of football was the hardest thing I have ever been through. Being lonely and confused with no friends, I wanted to go home. Wearing the full black pads was the weirdest feeling ever. It constrained my body’s movement so much. . It was in the upper 0 degrees and my dark pads soaked up the sun’s rays like a sponge. I was ready to pass out. They put us through so many drills and so much running my legs hurt for weeks after. The first thing that came to my mind after the first day ended was “quit.” I could end all the pain and suffering and go home everyday after school and be a couch potato. But for some unknown reason to this day, I didn’t. For four long years I went to every single grueling practice and pushed forward. I wasn’t the biggest or strongest on the team, but that pushed me even harder to work with more determination. Playing in the big games with hundreds of fans screaming and cheering is a memory I will never forget. Making it to the playoffs my senior year was a sweet moment that would be hard to top. Now that it is all over, I miss playing dearly. Now I realize what football had really given me, a whole new confidence level. It had built my body physically as well as mentally. It showed off with four years of Academic All Conference Awards as well as being the strongest guy on the team. Friends were made and lost teamwork, loyalty, and motivation were all developed; and it was a once in a lifetime experience that will stay with me until my last down.
As everybody knows, friends are the foundation of high school. You rely on them for your troubles and inspirations. To fool around with and have memories with, to be
there when you need them and when they need you. Without them, you would have nothing. I thought I would have trouble making friends at a new school, fortunately, I
couldn’t have been more wrong. During the first year of football, all of us bonded, in and out of school. We all became buddies and did everything together. (As long as our moms could drive us there first) Then there was the girl stage. Let’s just say I’m still working on that. I wasn’t really a ladies man, especially after I went 0- when asking girls to my homecoming dance. I was turned down three times in a row, but at least I knew I had the confidence to ask the girls out. Then all of a sudden, a huge moment arrived. I somehow managed to be voted onto the 00 Streamwood Homecoming Court. Talk about a jaw dropping experience. I had to walk into the middle of the gym all by myself dressed in a heavy dark suit, (I hate them with a passion) and stand there for 10 minutes while they explained my life story. I know I turned tomato red and was shaking. It was the most nerve racking moment in my life. Everybody on the court was my friend, and even though I didn’t win, I was still happy to be voted on, and also glad that it was over.

Critical Analysis of Joshua Quittner’s “Invasion of Privacy”
Joshua Quittner, in his Aug 5th, 17 Time Magazine article entitled, “Invasion of Privacy”, attempts to get us to “lighten up” on being overly concerned about our privacy. Quittner, a journalist, frequent contributor to Newsday and Wired, and news director for Pathfinder.com, admits to willingly giving up some privacy in the name of security, convenience and improved service; and he believes that we are just as “ambivalent” about it as he is. Quittner is not entirely successful in his attempt to get us to lighten up. In fact, he probably has the opposite of the desired effect in many readers. Quittner increases awareness, and frightens with examples, inadvertently making readers even more paranoid about their privacy.
Mr. Quittner states that at first he, “couldn’t get worked up about privacy” (p 4), citing two instances in which his privacy was violated. They were both taken care of, and no real harm was done in the end. Then, he relates how he did get worked up when his phone was hacked repeatedly. The authorities could not do anything about it. All said, he diffused the anxiety created by this experience with humor. These experiences helped him to realize that we don’t lose our privacy all at once. Rather, we constantly give away little bits of it. Quittner claims he doesn’t mind giving up a little privacy in the name of convenience, and believes we feel the same way.
Quittner’s credibility does not support his thesis. Before Quittner gets too far into convincing us that we ought to give up some privacy in the name of convenience, he concedes to actively tracking users’ activities on his own web site (p40). While his honesty is commendable, how can the reader remain unsuspicious of a person who has a vested interest in information gathering, trying to convince him that giving away his personal information really isn’t all that bad?
Further, Quittner’s arguments and logic are not sufficiently convincing. He states that what people really want is to know more about who knows what about them (p 7). Quittner purports that we don’t really want privacy, citing the popularity of tell-all talk shows as examples. This comparison is fallacious, unfair and unrepresentative to say the least. Surely it represents bad taste in television programming and nothing regarding privacy.
The opposing views and examples cited by Quittner send the reader in the opposite direction. He references a child rapist rifling through medical records to find new victims, bankers cross-referencing medical records to find cancer patients and deny them loans, and large corporations, “testing our DNA for possible imperfections,” in order to deny jobs (p 8). These examples are too striking not to stand out as extreme causes for concern. In addition, they can not be discounted as fallacious or invented, as they are quite real.
Fundamentally, I agree that I want to know more about who has my personal data and what they are doing with it. However, that knowledge is not enough for me. Quittner opposes new laws or agencies to regulate privacy. I think they are both warranted. Like Quittner, I too was not able to get worked up about privacy at first. Now, thanks to Quittner and other articles, I am a bit worked up about it!
A man in his position has to take the stance that giving up some privacy is alright, since his business thrives on people’s data. Most of his arguments end up appearing less than logical and less than convincing. The examples given as opposition tend to hook themselves in the reader’s mind with more grappling power than any of his other arguments or examples. Quittner leaves readers more worried about privacy than when the began, inadvertently reinforcing the opposing view. Readers will scarcely be lightening up about privacy because of this article.

He references a child rapist rifling through medical records to find new victims, bankers cross-referencing medical records to find cancer patients and deny them loans, and large corporations, “testing our DNA for possible imperfections,” in order to deny jobs (p 8). These examples are too striking not to stand out as extreme causes for concern. In addition, they can not be discounted as fallacious or invented, as they are quite real.
Fundamentally, I agree that I want to know more about who has my personal data and what they are doing with it. However, that knowledge is not enough for me. Quittner opposes new laws or agencies to regulate privacy. I think they are both warranted. Like Quittner, I too was not able to get worked up about privacy at first. Now, thanks to Quittner and other articles, I am a bit worked up about it!
A man in his position has to take the stance that giving up some privacy is alright, since his business thrives on people’s data. Most of his arguments end up appearing less than logical and less than convincing. The examples given as opposition tend to hook themselves in the reader’s mind with more grappling power than any of his other arguments or examples. Quittner leaves readers more worried about privacy than when the began, inadvertently reinforcing the opposing view. Readers will scarcely be lightening up about privacy because of this article.
