Written in iambic tetrameters, “A Valediction Forbidding Mourning” consists of nine quatrains and rhyming ABAB form. In this poem, John Donne is speaking about his love, that no physical separation can affect the love that they have for each other because their love is perfect and never endless. The title itself, “A Valediction” means an act of forbidding farewell. Throughout the entire poem, Donne uses a recurring image of a circle in different forms. He does this to compare the lovers and to show their complete and perfect love for each other.
In the first two stanzas, Donne employs a conceit comparing love to a man’s soul leaving him at the time of death. The line “ ‘The breath goes now’ and some say ‘no’,” (4), show that parting from each other can be as difficult to understand, as is the moment of death. In stanza’s three and four, Donne uses abstruse astrological terminology, such as “spheres” (11), and “Sublunary lovers” (1), referring to below the moon or relating to the earth and its inhabitants. In stanza four, Donne is telling us that the love from normal lovers below on earth, those who require sensual contact (“Whose soul is sense” (14)), can’t understand an absence from each other. His love is perfect (spiritual) and can’t be compared with the simple and physical things that constituted other’s love. The first line in stanza five, “But we, by a love so much refined” (17), shows that their love for each other is above everyone else; it is on a different plane completely. He even states in line 18 that their love for each other is so perfect, that they themselves can’t even explain it. Their love isnt affected by sensory things, such as eyes, lips, and hands (0), yet he continues with the rest of the poem trying to explain what they have.
In stanza six, Donne tells us that being apart doesn’t dull the love (1), and uses a conceit of gold. “A breach, but an expansion/ like gold to airy thinness beat.” (8,), Donne is showing that stretched over a distance and span of time, the love is too strong to be breached or broken. Between stanzas six and seven, there is a shift. He is now using abstruse math terminology to compare the two lovers to a compass. The alliteration “fixed foot” in line 7 is the perfect union of their souls, which the non-existence of one or both of the partners cannot bring an end to the love that is felt by both. This shows that the personified compass is the separation that the two lovers will endure. The compass in a way foreshadows the perfect union of their souls after the “fixed foot” (7), “makes my circle just/and makes me end where I begun” (5,6). This completes the circle conceit by bringing the story to its beginning.

With this in mind, inside a democracy there is a predominant theme of a very visible police force. Foucault comments on this, “It is an apparatus that must be coextensive with the entire social body and not only by the extreme limits that it embraces, but by the minuteness of details it is concerned with” (4). The police become not only a disciplinary force but have merely observational intentions of the smallest facts and actions.
This ever gazing supervision that is necessary to maintain order in a democracy is the same type of supervision required to maintain order in a panoptic prison. A camera in a public area while perhaps discouraging crime from that very area is doing nothing more than displacing the crime. But that illusion of safety allows people to rationalize being watched in nearly every place they go.
By allowing people nearly unconditional freedom, society inevitably trusts each individual with the task of deciding which actions are acceptable and which are not. Those decisions are also aided by the presence of an authority that people fear. The presence of surveillance has an effect on the citizens. The purpose of all the cameras is to force the society to generate its own sense of self-control. By regulating themselves the people make the cameras less and less necessary. Like a panopticon the actions of the masses in a democracy are primarily fueled by a fear of punishment.
A democracy does not squelch the individuality of a person, it does not repress them. A democracy has the ability to intertwine the individual in with the society. Therefore allowing the individuals to become closer to the whole, to the higher authority, and making their actions much easily observable. The more easily observable the actions of the masses become, the more easily manipulated they are. The people in the society of surveillance are almost entirely unaware of the power that those cameras have over their every day actions. While the people understand they are there, truly understanding the psychological effect of being watched has on them goes almost completely without reflection.
Foucault understands that power is truly internal. The threat of punishment works because “it arrests or regulates movement, it clears up confusion” (46). Society interested in all the factors around them that control power and prestige when in fact the only power those people maintain is the ability to elicit the actions they desire from the citizens they govern. The charisma most often in found in politicians is the ability to manipulate people while not allowing them to realize they are being manipulated. People elect officials to ensure their freedom, when in fact the officials they elect are the ones with the best ability to control the citizen’s actions and thoughts.
The overwhelming similarity that a democracy has with panopticism spreads to a worldwide scene. It is not merely just the people within its borders that a democratic giant, such as America, surveys. All the countries around the world are subject to the roving eye of American power and influence. America has become to the world what the central tower is to a panoptic prison. It is the unseen, but undeniable power that makes leaders from around the world think about the consequences of their actions.
Foucault’s theories involving panopticism stretch far beyond a system of housing criminals, students, or lunatics. It shows the underlying methodology so commonly used to govern the masses. We found less discrepancy in Diesel with a result of .64. Right now this brand is consider for about a year or so to be in vogue, another factor that it is important to consider because some times people use clothing not for the fact that it matches between the self concept and the appreciation of the brand, they tend to get the brand just because everyone else use it.
Following Diesel we can find Guess that is a popular brand but in the University is not used to much. The result was .7.
About Mango there were aprox. 10% of the women that did not know the brand , probably because is new in Quito, but the usage of this clothing is growing considerably fast. The result was .0.
We think that it is important to realize this exercise more than one time to really appreciate the results, definitely the self concept had to do a lot with the clothing taste, but the society’s pressure in middle class, and in high class, is a lot, so for marketing it is important to think about this factor too.

Tartuffe was a funny exciting play starring many talented third year students of theatre. The story was about two in love people,
Mariane and Valere, and the way they plot against a hypocrite who is trying to break up their family and send them broke. Tartuffe (Hypocrite) played by Damien Robertson played the character wonderfully and created great dramatic intent.
The story started at Orgons house with Madame Pernell leaving to avoid an argument over the character of Tartuffe and continued on to Cleante and Dorine warning Orgon of Tartuffe. In defiance to the advice organ decides to marry Mariane to Tartuffe. Mariane upset and horrified plots together with Valere. Tartuffe is then caught in the act by Damis after overture to Elmeir. Orgon in denial after hearing of Tartuffe’s behavior decides to leave all of his wordily goods to Tartuffe and marry him to Mariane that night. Family and friends resist this seeming madness and persuade Orgon to allow his wife to try to prove the truth by witnessing Tartuffe’s deceit. Orgon realizes Tartuffe’s malicious intent. Tartuffe then uses Orgons personal papers that had been entrusted to him against Orgon in order to claim his house by a deed he had possession of. In the end Tartuffe’s fraudulent character is revealed and an officer of the king arrests him. The plot is used well to keep the audience’s eyes peeled and used great comedy techniques and dramatic techniques to do this.

Orgon, played by Rhys James Rees was the main character who believed Tartuffe couldn’t do a wrong.
Madame Pernelle, played by Amy Spruce was Orgons mother.
Elmire, played by Renee Mclyntosh played as Orgons wife.
Damis, played by Phillip Mclnnes was Orgons son
Mariane, played by Karen Roberts was Orgons daughter who was in love with Valere.
Valere, played by Paul Ashcroft was in love with Mariane.
Cleante, played by Stephen Francis was the brother in law of Orgon.
Tartuffe, played by Damien Robertson acted as the hypocrite.
Dorine, played by Alexandria Steffensen acted as maid to Mariane
My Loyal and Flipote, played by Eleanor Howlett acted as a tipstaff and a maid to Madame pernelle.
Stage space was used well and was occupied most of the time. It consisted of a high stage area, which was centre to the whole stage. The higher stage was placed with stairs left and right and a little door at the front. The higher stage was good as it gave a sense of characters standing on the stage as being superior to people standing below. I thought the stage space could have been spaced out more so that when all of the characters were using the stage at the same time they could be seen from all of the audience’s angles. I thought they used the space well because the characters who were on stage never cluttered in one place. I also think the props on the stage were used well and created a good setting.
Costume design was used wonderfully with creating the setting. The use of the dresses made you see the role in which the females where representing e.g. always having to be covered and coming past the ankles. Males clothing was more the boots and tights which represented the men as ready for battle or to fight e.g. use of the swords. I thought the clothing worked really well with the year it was set in. Lighting also contributed well with the setting and was mainly used to establish the emotions or dramatic scene approaching e.g. the use of flashing light’s to establish a storm or fight. I thought music helped with lighting to establish the scene approaching as it gave you an idea oft the seriousness of the scene.
During Tartuffe I felt as if the scenes before the interval were more interesting as I started to get restless and bored. Before the interval it mainly introduced the characters and the main idea of the play. After the interval more action was used the only problem of this was the audience already new what the characters didn’t so we were basically seeing it all again but with the characters finding out. Overall I thought the begging of the play as the best because this is when we wanted to see more and find out more.
The main theme of the play was that love was to strong to tear Valere and Mariane apart and that lying and hypocrising people won’t leave you as the winner.
Tartuffe was a great dramatic and comedy play, which I really enjoyed. The play was interesting and kept the audience peeled and intrigued most of the time. I would recommend the play to 14 year olds and older and overall showed the social values of the olden days.

The American notion of justice (Western notion) and the National Socialist notion of justice (non-Western notion) will be described as well as the evolution of the Greek form of justice into the American form. Western Notions of Justice
A Greek by the name of Draco introduced the first written code of laws to Greece in 60 BC. The code was based on unwritten laws known only to a few aristocratic judges, who often favored the nobility. Dracos code enabled people to find out for themselves what the laws were. Dracos code was said to be written in blood because it made almost all crimes punishable by death. Solon later modified Draco’s code, reducing the death penalty. Solon is credited for inventing democracy by creating an electoral system that gave every male citizen exactly one vote. Around a century and a half after Solon modified Draco’s code, the Romans issued a

It was designed to serve the interests of all people, rich and poor, Northerner and Southerner, farmers worker, and business person. The Constitution contained amendments known as the Bill of Rights. The ten amendments in the Bill of Rights were written to protect individual liberties against possible unjust rule by the national government. National Socialist’s Notion of Justice (Non-Western)
National Socialism, also known as Nazism, got its start in Germany. The principals of nazism state that races could be scientifically classified as superior and inferior. (Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia) Nazism declared that the highest racial type was the Germanic, while blacks and Jews were at the bottom of the racial pyramid. National Socialist believe only pure races that do not mix with inferior groups are capable of creating lasting civilizations. Plato’s Republic
In the Republic Plato discusses the question of “what is justice?”; he uses a Socratic dialogue to express his views on the subject. The Socratic dialogue is a process that involves proposal, criticism, and rejection of the subject at hand. The
dialogue has the following characters speaking and voicing their opinion on justice
and related topics Socrates, Cephalus, Polemarchus, Thrasymachus, Glaucon, Adeimantus, and Cleitophon . The Socratic dialogue begins when Socrates, Cephalus, and Polemarchus begin to argue the question “what is justice?” Socrates says that justice is something socially beneficial to society. In contrast, Cephalus suggests that justice is telling the truth and repaying one‘s debts, while Polemarchus implies that justice is helping ones friends and hurting ones enemies. Thrasymachus’s definition of justice was that justice is nothing but the advantage of the stronger. After Thrasymachus, Cephalus, and Polemarchus speak their opinions Socrates brings up situations which call these views of justice into question.
Plato’s ideal republic is composed of three classes; the commoners, the warriors, and the philosophers. The philosophers will be the leaders of the ideal state, because they contain the virtue of wisdom needed to make political decisions. The commoners possess the virtue of temperance, and the warriors possess courage. Plato implies that one is born with their place in society already set. (Grube, Number)
Wright’s Native Son
Native Son by Richard Wright is the story of a young black male, by the name of Bigger Thomas, living in Chicago in the 10’s. Bigger and his family are poverty stricken and they live in what is known as the Black Belt. Bigger is given a chance to make himself a little richer when a rich white family, the Daltons, hires him to be their chauffer. Bigger has to drive the Dalton’s daughter (Mary) and her boyfriend (Jan Erlone), who are both communists, to a political speech. When Bigger returns Mary home she is drunk and Bigger has to carry her to bed. Mary’s blind mother comes into the room to check on her daughter while Bigger is still there. Bigger tries to protect himself in this situation by trying to keep Mary quiet. To keep her from speaking Bigger “pushed downward with all of his weight, determined that she must not move or make any sound that would betray him.” (Wright, 74) A minute later Mary was dead, Bigger had murdered her. As an attempt to hide his crime, Bigger burns her body in the furnace.
Later the Dalton family discovers their daughter’s charred bones. In response Bigger flees with his lover, Bessie. Bigger soon develops a fear that his lover will betray him, so he murders her. Bigger is later captured by the authorities and he admits to the murder of Mary, he is then sentenced to death.
My Interpretation of Justice
After studying the format of Western justice and then Nazism, I’ve learned what both systems were trying to accomplish. Both forms of justice had the same goal in mind, to form a civilization that is as just as possible. The National Socialist’s goal was to create the ideal state with little or no injustice, where everyone will be created as equals. Unfortunately to accomplish a society where everyone will be created equal, the National Socialism felt all but the Germans should be eliminated.
I do feel that Western justice has tried through history not to create as perfect of a civilization as the National Socialist have. I believe Western justice has tried more to create a system that can last through time.
The National Socialists, in my opinion, were similar to Plato in their view of the ideal republic. Plato implied in the Republic that the ideal city would have certain classes that distinguished ones place in society. The National Socialist also divided people into classes, but their classes were based on race not knowledge. Plato also thought that one was born with their place in society already set. I believe that it’s not just to kill someone because they committed murder themselves, but if someone shot my sister I would be more than willing to shot them. I feel killing someone because they killed someone themselves is unjust, but I do still strongly support it. I feel injustice is necessary sometimes to aid in the creation of a just society. The need for injustice to create justice, is somewhat like what the National Socialists were doing when they tried to eliminate the Jews.
Injustice is a highly beneficial thing to me when done to a certain point. I feel injustice is somewhat crucial to modern day life. I feel doing nothing but just acts in today’s society will leave you in a lower class. I believe doing a few unjust acts throughout your life can be the difference of making $15,000 compared to $15,000 a year. If doing an unjust act like fibbing on a job application or cheating on a test can be the difference in $100,000 a year, than do a little injustice. I consider most of the acts law enforcement and the military perform to be unjust, but I feel those unjust acts are needed to aid in the control of injustice.

became even more unclear on my own definition of justice. Before I looked at justice as doing what is right, no matter who it hurt in the process. My final interpretation of justice would have to be that justice is doing what is acceptable in a society. I feel that the US army killing other armies who threaten us to be unjust, but at the same time I feel that justice is being done. I think it is unjust to kill someone who committed a crime, however I believe that justice is taking place when that person pays for their crime. I believe doing these few unjust acts aid to control the level of justice in society by making a major proportion of society scared to perpetrate a crime.

Western Notions of Justice
A Greek by the name of Draco introduced the first written code of laws to Greece in 60 BC. The code was based on unwritten laws known only to a few aristocratic judges, who often favored the nobility. Dracos code enabled people to find out for themselves what the laws were. Dracos code was said to be written in blood because it made almost all crimes punishable by death. Solon later modified Draco’s code, reducing the death penalty. National Socialism, also known as Nazism, got its start in Germany. The principals of nazism state that races could be scientifically classified as superior and inferior. (Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia) Nazism declared that the highest racial type was the Germanic, while blacks and Jews were at the bottom of the racial pyramid. National Socialist believe only pure races that do not mix with inferior groups are capable of creating lasting civilizations. Plato’s Republic
In the Republic Plato discusses the question of “what is justice?”; he uses a Socratic dialogue to express his views on the subject. The Socratic dialogue is a process that involves proposal, criticism, and rejection of the subject at hand. The
dialogue has the following characters speaking and voicing their opinion on justice
and related topics Socrates, Cephalus, Polemarchus, Thrasymachus, Glaucon, Adeimantus, and Cleitophon . The Socratic dialogue begins when Socrates, Cephalus, and Polemarchus begin to argue the question “what is justice?” Socrates says that justice is something socially beneficial to society. In contrast, Cephalus suggests that justice is telling the truth and repaying one‘s debts, while Polemarchus implies that justice is helping ones friends and hurting ones enemies. Thrasymachus’s definition of justice was that justice is nothing but the advantage of the stronger. After Thrasymachus, Cephalus, and Polemarchus speak their opinions Socrates brings up situations which call these views of justice into question.
Plato’s ideal republic is composed of three classes; the commoners, the warriors, and the philosophers. The philosophers will be the leaders of the ideal state, because they contain the virtue of wisdom needed to make political decisions. The commoners possess the virtue of temperance, and the warriors possess courage. Plato implies that one is born with their place in society already set. (Grube, Number)
Wright’s Native Son
Native Son by Richard Wright is the story of a young black male, by the name of Bigger Thomas, living in Chicago in the 10’s. Bigger and his family are poverty stricken and they live in what is known as the Black Belt. Bigger is given a chance to make himself a little richer when a rich white family, the Daltons, hires him to be their chauffer. Bigger has to drive the Dalton’s daughter (Mary) and her boyfriend (Jan Erlone), who are both communists, to a political speech. When Bigger returns Mary home she is drunk and Bigger has to carry her to bed. Mary’s blind mother comes into the room to check on her daughter while Bigger is still there. Bigger tries to protect himself in this situation by trying to keep Mary quiet. To keep her from speaking Bigger “pushed downward with all of his weight, determined that she must not move or make any sound that would betray him.” (Wright, 74) A minute later Mary was dead, Bigger had murdered her. As an attempt to hide his crime, Bigger burns her body in the furnace.
Later the Dalton family discovers their daughter’s charred bones. In response Bigger flees with his lover, Bessie. Bigger soon develops a fear that his lover will betray him, so he murders her. Bigger is later captured by the authorities and he admits to the murder of Mary, he is then sentenced to death.
My Interpretation of Justice
After studying the format of Western justice and then Nazism, I’ve learned what both systems were trying to accomplish. Both forms of justice had the same goal in mind, to form a civilization that is as just as possible. The National Socialist’s goal was to create the ideal state with little or no injustice, where everyone will be created as equals. Unfortunately to accomplish a society where everyone will be created equal, the National Socialism felt all but the Germans should be eliminated.
I do feel that Western justice has tried through history not to create as perfect of a civilization as the National Socialist have. I believe Western justice has tried more to create a system that can last through time.
The National Socialists, in my opinion, were similar to Plato in their view of the ideal republic. Richard Rodriguez’s “The Achievement of Desire” is a story within a story. The author uses a frame, a literary device to remind him of himself. Rodriguez sees in the fourteen-year-old-girl, the only person who is paying attention to what he says, the only person who grasps on his every word, who’s eyes shine with enthusiasm and ambition, the boy who once did the same things to his teachers. He remembers his own background from the very beginning. Having grown up with parents who remained with the traditions of their Hispanic culture, Richard’s ambition to learn and to be like his teachers separated him from his roots. His parents’ primary language was Spanish. Once he entered the English classroom, his became English. But the language barrier was only one of the many barriers that stood between him and his parents. Once a student, Rodriguez began to live two different lives in two very different worlds. This difference is shown mainly through the different mentalities, those of his teachers and those of his parents. This discrepancy widened the gap between the two generations. Every child’s role models are his parents. Once he stepped into that classroom, Rodriguez’s role models became his teachers. He came to idolize them. He began by imitating their accents, using their diction trusting everything they said. This enthusiasm continued at home, in front of his parents. He corrected their every mistake by saying what his teacher told him “My teacher told us…” He told his mother that he wanted to become a teacher. In fact, as Rodriguez himself admits, it was not teaching that attracted him. He did not want to be a teacher; he wanted to be just like his teachers. He took this desire to the extreme by even wanting to assume a teacher’s persona. Should someone ask them if his parents were proud of their boy, they would surely answer positively. But if someone were to ask Rodriguez if he was proud of his parents he would admit “I was not proud of my mother and father.” In his time and where he lived, the fact that he denies his parents is a serious offence. This denial of his parents came out of their not resemblance to his teachers. They just were not like his teachers. He spent more time with them than he spent with his parents. He spoke to his classmates more than he spoke to his family.
As a student, Rodriguez lived two different lives in two distinct worlds. At home he is taught to trust his instinct. Then, in the classroom, teachers emphasize the role of “first think than act”. At school he can receive answers to questions that could not even be asked at home. He can think about ideas, “big ideas”, ideas that his parents did not even consider at home. At home he finds a way of life opposed to the one to which he is used in the classroom. In the beginning, there exists a balance between the school and home. The student does not want to alter that balance. He wants to continue his studies, but he still wants to be a part of his family. Once he becomes eager for success, the balance is lost. He devotes himself to studying, ignoring his family life. He finds more pleasure in reading his books than in spending time with his parents. The conversation between him and his mother, once a “flood of intimate sounds”, is now a yes or no based conversation. Between him and his parents there no longer exists a conversation, but a deep silence. As Rodriguez himself admits, “he takes his first step toward academic success, away from his family.” His departure to college made the gap between him and his family become physically visible. Even so, his family is the one who supported his every move. His mother is the one that arouse his desire for education. “Get all the education you can; with an education you can do anything.” Rodriguez adds “With a good education she could have done anything.” At every graduation they were present to support him. When he received an award at grammar school his mother told him that he had shown “the gringos”, meaning the Americans (he was better than the ones who did not have to face every obstacle that he overcame). His brother and sisters also contributed to his desire to acquire as much knowledge as he possibly could. They brought home awards and trophies that he “came to want”.
One could very well say that Rodriguez’s “The Achievement of Desire” is a “book about books”. When he comes home from school, the student wants to take the school home with him. Thus, he brings home books in order to achieve the sensation of the classroom, “mental calm”. Everywhere you see him, he reads a book.
