Written in iambic tetrameters, “A Valediction Forbidding Mourning” consists of nine quatrains and rhyming ABAB form. In this poem, John Donne is speaking about his love, that no physical separation can affect the love that they have for each other because their love is perfect and never endless. The first line in stanza five, “But we, by a love so much refined” (17), shows that their love for each other is above everyone else; it is on a different plane completely. He even states in line 18 that their love for each other is so perfect, that they themselves can’t even explain it. This shows that the personified compass is the separation that the two lovers will endure. The compass in a way foreshadows the perfect union of their souls after the “fixed foot” (7), “makes my circle just/and makes me end where I begun” (5,6). This completes the circle conceit by bringing the story to its beginning.
