Australian Drama and Theatre

The Seven Stages of Grieving, collaborated by Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman, and Garry’s House, written by Debra Oswald are both Australian dramas that examine the relationships between Australian characters and the environments that they inhabit. This is achieved through the use of dramatic forms, styles, and conventions. The comparison on the two plays shows a dramatic contrast between the traditional Aboriginal culture and the rough city/country contrast of the white Australian culture. These two theatre pieces also have thematic parallels which include life, death, grief, guilt, isolation, regret and anger. These themes are expressed through the way in which the characters relate to one another and their emotions are reflected through these relationships which are influenced and shaped by the freedom and constraints that their environments hold.

The world is made up of life and life is the central thing that people, animals and nature all have in common. It is what makes the world united without having to take into account religion, skin colour, language or gender. The purpose for living beings is to live and this is what is at the centre of the two plays, Garry’s house and the seven stages of grieving. In Garry’s house, it is life that is the reason for the five characters to hold relationships together and it is life that helps all, bar Garry, to push through past their own selfish desires and attitudes to see the needs of the baby and in that frame of mind, the characters change accordingly to meet the needs that have been neglected or not completed.

For Christine, the life of her nephew brought out the maternal emotions that she had ignored in pursuit of her career. She re-adjusted her actions and attitudes to best suite those needs of the baby. On the other end of the scale, Garry succumbed to the stresses and pressures that pregnancy and the construction of a house bring and chose to leave the situation all together. It appears that Garry felt that life was not worth persevering through the pain and torment to move past the state the he found himself in the night he committed suicide. QUOTE… (HEARTBREAK.) The life Sue-Anne lives is an emotional roller coaster. She could commonly be described as narcissistic as her actions and conversations lend the impression that the world revolves around her and she holds little consideration for the emotions that others may feel after encountering her. She has not lived a long life as she is only seventeen. With this still in mind, she is very immature considering she is pregnant and it is evident that she has not taken her share of the responsibility for the life she helped create.

Exxon Mobile Corp.

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Exxon Mobile Corp. even at the eleventh hour. Exxon Mobile Corp.

There are hundreds of financial decisions made every day. What is the basis for these decisions, and is there any way to avoid uncertainty? What thought process do buyers and sellers utilize when attempting to make sound investment decisions? These are questions asked by many. Finances are a great concern for most Americans, especially for those planning for their future after retirement. It is not a lack of concern that prevents many from investing money today to make money tomorrow. The hesitation comes from a lack of knowledge. It is advantageous to carefully research a potential investment company and compare it to similar companies in its industry. It is my attempt in this paper to provide the reader with a basis for valuation techniques. I will be focusing on only one actively traded security, and will ultimately decide on the value of the stock.

Project Environment

The security that I have chosen is Exxon Mobile Corporation. I feel that this company belongs to a unique industry that exemplifies uncertainty and volatility. Like others, the energy industry has been feeling the effects of the slow economy. Consumers have certainly felt these effects, as a result. I will attempt to discuss the environment of the energy industry to obtain a better understanding of the financial outlook for Exxon.

This industry’s functions are the exploration, production, manufacture, transportation, and sale of crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum products. The world’s largest non-government oil companies consist of Exxon, Royal Dutch/Shell, BP, Total Fina, ENI, and Texaco.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has a lot of control over the supply and price of gasoline. The organization is made up of several countries that hold a majority of the world’s proven oil reserves. During 000, around 46% of our oil came from OPEC nations. The top suppliers of oil to the United States are Canada, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Mexico. We depend on them for our oil supply to maintain a reasonable inventory.

The industry is on the rebound from the cuts made during the oil price collapse of 17/18, and has responded with higher prices. A variety of factors started the oil crisis. Asian economies that had once dominated the oil industry suffered as they felt the effects of an economic collapse. The Northern Hemisphere experienced a warmer than usual winter, which reduced demand. Surpluses developed, which made prices fall. OPEC became very involved, encouraging countries to better manage their production. These higher prices have reached most of the industry, including producers, refiners, pipeline companies, equipment makers, field service providers, and gas station attendants. All are reaping the benefits and enjoying new profits. Twenty-seven major energy companies reported overall net income of $14.1 billion on revenues of $1.4 billion during the fourth quarter of 1. These higher prices are enabling the industry to develop new oil fields, accelerate production, and store more refined products.

Oil is known as a commodity. Commodities are basic materials available from a wide variety of suppliers whose prices are very subject to the laws of supply and demand. Prices of commodities have fallen in recent months. In dollars adjusted for inflation, gas sells for about the same as it did 0 years ago. This means that the increase in prices is just an economic normality. In general, the commodities environment of today is one of heightened competition, excess capacity and lower operating costs, and an abundant supply. As oil prices began to fall in 17, the entire commodities index fell significantly over recent history. This shows the dominance of oil prices.

Project Analysis

To properly analyze an oil company, you must begin by looking at general industry factors. Once you have established an outlook for the entire industry, you should begin to review company specific factors. This gives the analyst the opportunity to compare individual company results with those of the industry on a whole. I will present several key ratios for Exxon to eventually determine its financial outlook. I will be using the most current data that I found on Exxon to compare with the same effective dates of other companies.

DuPont Equation

The DuPont Equation is very useful in determining two key ratios. These two are Return on Equity (ROE) and Return on Assets (ROA). A company’s ROE is calculated as follows

ROE= Asset Turnover x Net Profit Margin x Leverage

By breaking ROE down into three parts an analyst can evaluate how well a company is managing assets, expenses and debt. The last reported ROE for Exxon was 14.7%. If we compare this to its fierce competitors, it fares well. Chevron, Texaco, Royal Dutch, and Exxon all seem to have experienced steady increases in ROE in the years leading up to the oil price collapse. Surprisingly, Exxon did not experience as much of a decrease as did all of the other companies. From 17 to 18 the return fell only 5 percentage points, as compared to Texaco, who fell almost 1 percentage points, and Royal Dutch, who fell almost 1. Exxon appears to make a great return on its equity, and is the only asset with any consistency.

A firm’s ROA is similar to the ROE, except the interest expense is added back to net income in the ROA calculation. Again, the most recent reports show Exxon with a steadily increasing return up until the oil collapse. All other companies dropped significantly. Recent figures show Exxon with a 6.6% return on assets. This seems to be about the average for the industry. By evaluating these two ratios, it appears that the oil collapse of 17 did not affect Exxon as much as it did every other company in the industry. There are many scenarios as to why this is. Perhaps they did not maintain a large quantity of oil; therefore they were not stuck with a surplus. Exxon could have had a very seasoned and knowledgeable team of financial planners that could foresee the oil crisis. Whatever the case, Exxon has proven to avoid the economic blows that affect the remainder of the industry.

The price/earnings ratio can tell prospective investors a lot about the asset. It essentially indicates the value that investors place on the company’s earnings. The last reported P/E ratio for Exxon had a high of 8 with a low of 8. This is the only company in the industry that saw an increase from the previous year. It has actually experienced a steady increase every year. The difference between the high and low market price is minimal, as compared to the span of other firms. This tells me that there is not as much price volatility as with other companies. The market price appears to be around the average for the industry.

A pertinent measure of operating efficiency is the profit margin. Exxon has a profit margin of . this year, and . last year. That makes the company consistent. Chevron has a little bit higher margin with .7, with last year being .4. The fact that other companies maintain a higher profit margin could mean a multitude of things. One possibility could be that Exxon has a lot of operating expenses. This could actually be advantageous to the company. Exxon may possess more operating equipment and may do more drilling than the other companies in the industry. This would create more expenses for Exxon, but in turn, may also create more revenue. Exxon has been looking to expand its drilling projects and this lower profit margin could very well be a short run effect.

Dividend Discount Model

A popular model used to value a stock is the dividend discount model. This method of estimating value sums all expected future dividend payments. For this purpose, I will be using the stable model. I feel it is best suited for Exxon because the company is experiencing long-term stable growth. All projected ratios for the firm show continued growth for Exxon. The company’s recent decision to incorporate more drilling should prove advantageous to its growth. Generally, these types of firms grow at a rate equal to the growth rate of the economy. For illustration purposes, we will use a growth rate of 6%. (inflation of % plus real growth in GDP of %) I will also use another growth rate of %, which is equal to the projected EPS growth rate for Exxon. The current dividend for the asset is $1.76. For ks, the required rate of return for the investment, we will use the formula as follows

return = risk-free rate + (market risk premium) beta

We will use the rate for a t-bill for the risk-free rate. The market risk premium is the expected return of the market in excess of the risk-free rate. For our purposes, we will use a percentage of 6.8%, which was suggested in an article about the dividend discount model. We will be using a beta of .41, given by the company’s stock information. If we plug these figures into our formula, we get a return of 8.7%.

ks = 6% + (6.8%) .41

To determine the value of the stock, we must incorporate the expected growth rate mentioned previously.

v = 1.76 (1.06) / .0870 - .06)

We find that the value of the stock is $6.10. If we compare this to the current selling price of $85, we can see that customers will pay a premium price for the Exxon name and brand.

If we use a growth rate of %, that equal to the projected EPS growth rate, we end up with a value of $68.51. There is not much difference between the total if using a 6% rate of growth or using a % growth rate. It is still well below the selling price of the security.

Capital Asset Pricing Model

Another formula that is useful when valuing a stock is the Capital Asset Pricing

Model (CAPM). This shows the expected return for the asset. There are three factors to consider in this computation the time value of money, the reward for bearing risk, and the amount of systematic risk. We used this formula previously when deciding the market risk premium. We can conclude from our result of an 8.7% reward-to-risk ratio, that there is more reward for bearing risk. 8.7% tends to be a bit higher than the industry average, but this could be because Exxon bears more risk.

Economic Value Added

The Economic Value Added (EVA) focuses on managerial effectiveness. It provides a good measure of the extent to which the firm has added to shareholder value. The common goal of all firms is to maximize shareholder wealth, and by monitoring and interpreting EVA, managers can do just that. EVA for Exxon was negative last year. This could be because the amount of capital grew more than Net Operating Profit

After Taxes. This pulled the EVA way down. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however. The value of the asset to shareholders has been fairly substantial in previous years, and we have proven already that existing stockholders deem the asset very valuable.

I have covered the most pertinent ratios and evaluation techniques that will enable us to value Exxon. The current selling price for the asset is approximately $85. We valued the stock using several different models. In using the dividend discount model, we found that the stock price was much higher that the value that we calculated. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however. I do not feel that Exxon has over-valued its asset. I think the company realizes that they are the leader in the oil industry, and investors are willing to pay a premium price for the brand. Our findings have proven Exxon to remain stable and consistent in an ever-changing, volatile environment. Investors trust the firm to continue to maximize their wealth, even in times of economic hardship. As we compared Exxon to competitors in the industry, we found that Exxon was the only company to remain fairly stable and strong through the oil collapse of 17/18. Exxon has continued to show growth in each year following the crisis. The Profit to Earnings ratio showed us that investors have faith in the future of the asset. There is not much of a spread between the high and low price. Investors trust that the stock will give them a good return. The company’s profit margin was slightly lower than other firms in the industry. We came to conclude, however, that this was probably a result of its recent plan to incorporate more drilling. The company may have more operating expenses than other firms, but this may work to Exxon’s advantage in the long run.

By analyzing these ratios and interpreting the meaning behind them, we can find the true value for an asset. We were able to conclude from our findings that Exxon is a leading company in the oil industry, and will only continue to grow in the next several years. We can see that existing investors hold a lot of hope in the firm’s ability to maximize stockholders’ wealth. As we begin to see revitalization in the economy, we will also see Exxon leading the way for the other companies in the oil industry.

Adrian Mitchell starts out his poem in a descriptive nature. He tells his exact location as he claims that ...[He] was walking in a government warehouse / Where the daylight never goes. And so, weve established where he is, but now, what is the significance of it. Why is he in a government warehouse? If you carefully note that the poem starts out in a government warehouse you can pretty much infer that this is a political poem. Mitchell uses the most influential tools possible, particularly repetition, symbolism, and tone, to help the reader uncover the true meaning of the poem.

Through Mitchells repetition the reader uncovers a deeper understanding of the poem. Over and over Mitchell pounds into our heads I saw Fifteen million plastic bags / hanging in a thousand rows. If your intuitive you may have discovered what this means, however, Mitchell gives us one more clue. Five million were stamped with Mickey Mouse / And they came in a smaller size. Through the repetition Mitchell nonchalantly portrays the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. The repetition helps the reader to understand what the plastic bags really are and what they represent.

It it through thick layers of surreal symbolism that Mitchell can show the reader how deep the rabbit hole really goes. The Fifteen million plastic bags that Mitchell speaks of are in fact body bags, which depict the eerie and subtle death that the victims of the nuclear fall out were all subject to. And Five million bags were six feet long, and five million men were soon to be six feet under. Five million were five foot five, and these five million women were the mothers of the Five million [that] were stamped with Mickey Mouse. With Mitchells use of symbolism and repetition the tone is clearly defined.

In discovering the tone of the poem we must first discover what the poets point of view is. Mitchell says So Ive taken my bag from the hanger / And Ive pulled it over my head / And Ill wait for the priest to sip it / So the radiation wont spread. When the reader reads this passage, its overwhelmingly eerie and surreal tone jumps out at you. Then the government worker subtly dies, leaving the reader not know what to expect next.

The poem ends in repetition. Leaving the reader with nothing but the subtle workers opposition to nuclear war. With fifteen million dead that leaves the reader forever changed a enlightened with a whole new perspective on life.

Joe Cole is set to be given a chance to make his mark on Sven-Goran Erikssons Euro 004 plans after being earmarked as Paul Scholes replacement against Denmark tomorrow.

Learning a new language is an inherently difficult task. However, as citizens of the new millenium, we must not be daunted by the enormity of the task at hand. We must say that yes, we want to learn new languages.

A useful new language to learn would be German. Though it is spoken by only about 100 million people, the economic significance of the German republic means that German is economically a more useful language than say French.

An American however would be more tempted to learn Spanish as it is a more useful language in the country. Given its geographical relationship with Mexico, it is hardly surprising that there are millions of Spanish speaking mexicans in the country.

The Macquarie school dictionary defines Euthanasia as The act of helping or letting someone die when they want to, because their pain or suffering had become too great.

In this definition there are two main points I would like to point out. The definition states “when they want to” and also “pain or suffering has become to great” These two very main points to Euthanasia are the base to my arguments and in very few words show the necessity for Euthanasia.

I have read many definitions on Euthanasia and I find they all relate to a quick and peaceful death, for those who no longer have the precious gift of quality of life.

Euthanasia, which is illegal, should be made legal in Australia. There is not doubt about this fact.

If you were a medical professional and an extremely ill and suffering patient asked you too peacefully end their life, stop all of their pain could you really refuse without a serious consideration of the pain this person is living through?

Quality of life is the substance for happiness. Without it how can a person be expected to go on living? Euthanasia gives those who have lost their quality of life an out, to stop their severe suffering.

You would have o be cruel to disagree with Euthanasia, when it is so obviously correct. People really need to put themselves into such a situation, see the suffering and the pain and the relief that would be felt at finding a way to stop the pain to fully understand why euthanasia is a necessity.

We cant let these political people that disagree with Euthanasia stop the rights (euthanasia is obviously apart of our human rights) that every human has.

Euthanasia is completely voluntary. For someone who is suffering unbelievably euthanasia is a serious option. Being that euthanasia is completely an option put to the individual, it is not forced upon them, and they decide wether or not to use it. Euthanasia is giving people a right to choose when; who with and how they die, and every human being should have the right to make these decisions, not the law.

The legalisation of euthanasia would be a huge step up in the processes taken. It would clean the whole process up.

In statistics it was found that out of the 660 people over 75 that ended their lives in 10-14

used drugs

17 swallowed chemicals

took corrosive or caustic substances

78 used carbon monoxide

171 hanged themselves

46 suffocated themselves via plastic

40 drowned themselves

10 used firearms

14 used cutting or piercing instruments

4 jumped from high places

15 jumped or lay in front or moving objets

10 electrocuted themselves.

People need to realise that if the laws made euthanasia legal that doctors would be involved in the deaths. There is no better evidence than there very statistics ton realise that euthanasia should be helped by the medical profession.

People who disagree with euthanasia need to come to their senses and realise if it was legal, just as the definition states the deaths would be peaceful and quick. In the same statistics it was also found that

7% of doctors believe that terminally ill persons have the right to suicide!

If our doctors agree with this situation then why should we as the public?

There have been a large amount of euthanasia cases. An example of a euthanasia case was Nancy Cruzan. Nancy was a year old woman who was in a vegetated state after being involved in a car accident. Nancy was fed via tubes. After many long court battles Nancy’s parents won the right to remove her tubes. Twelve days after this decision Nancy died. Nancy no longer retained any quality of life, and still we denied her to the right to die peacefully with a simple injection, and instead forced her to starve to death, Cases like these prove how important it is for the realisation or Euthanasia to be recognised by the law.

Imagine that you are in a position where your loved one was suffering uncontrollably, and there was no chance of survival. Would you not want this person to die peacefully rather than in a horrid way? If you could end this suffering and pain and you wouldn’t, then how would you feel if you were the loved one?

critical thinking

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like critical thinking even at the eleventh hour. Chapter 1

Critical thinking is a thought process that involves more than just thinking. Is a process in which you have to go into details and not just a simple assumption. Critical thinking involves many variety of different point of views. Is a deep thinking that would take you more than just five to ten minutes to think.

The usual thinking is a fast reaction toward the action that was just made. For example you might think that a kid at times behaves bad because he’s in a need of discipline. You already added a conclusion with out even including the body. That’s when critical thinking comes in. Maybe the kid behaves bad because he’s in need of attention or maybe he has an attention disorder. Whatever it is critical thinking would go deeper into the subject before assuming right away.

At time critical thinking can also be used with others point of views. The way you see something might not be the way that somebody else sees it. This means that someone can be right and the other can be wrong. Unless if your hardheaded, you would have to put yourself in the other persons shoes to see their point of view. Critical thinking does that. It helps you think not only by yourself, but with the help of others. At times the way you saw your point of view it would change since hearing there’s.

This process doesn’t take a few minutes, but it takes a while and a little if dedication while your at it. Is a deep thinking process that can help you to think before you speak. Critical thinking just contains four things and they are Comparison, relationship, testimony and definition. When you add this to your critical thinking it would glide easily through.

I think Mr. Goodman’s assumption might be that he cares for more the students success and not just the money the weekly money he’s making. As for the assumption he made that grades should be abolished, I would have to agree on that. A grade shouldn’t determine the level of intelligence you have. Nor, if you pass the class or not, but it should be in the effort and hardship you put into it. Making determinations like this puts students to drop out of school and have low self esteem.

Albert Stein was a genius man, but yet he was horrible in math. If he would’ve been now in days in school maybe he would’ve not passed college because he would’ve failed math with a letter grade of D or F. So than he wouldn’t come out to be the man he is. Every one is smart in their own ways and I think a letter grade can not measure your intelligence nor a grading system. But it should be the effort and dedication you put into it. Many teachers at times pass kids with an A because their work was nicer than the others, but yet they don’t know if they cheated or had someone to do it for them and the other who did failed while doing it him self and involving more dedication to it. So what happens they quite.

This would connect into having a low self esteem. When a kid starts to get F’s in all of their assignments, automatically he’s known to be stupid and other kids might make fun of him and not want to join him when is time to work in groups. At times teachers might put him with others in the group that arrange his same grade. How is it possible that this kid is going to grow up to be someone successful.

In conclusion, yes I do agree with Mr. Goodman, and in every proposal he has in abolishing the grading. A men like this shows interest for our future kids success. I think this should be brought into every ones concern.

When Goodman says “the great majority of professors agree that the grading hinders teaching” he offers evidences with collection of essays , “examining in Harvard college”.

The arguments that might be made that grading assists in teaching is that maybe at times teachers just give work from the book to read and answer the questions. I think the process of learning is to be helped and have someone to explain it to you carefully and with patience. Not every student is a fast learner. Therefore we should have teachers that would sit down and teach our students with intimidating them. At times iv seen teachers just give a grade to a student because they already know that is A student or an F student and suddenly assume there grade. Other times we might have the student who are into sports that need a passing grade and they have there coach talk to the teachers and many would give them that grade. How are students going to learn with out being teach.

I do think the Goodman should have made more arguments and shown weakness. Because I’m pretty sure we have out there many people who disagree with his theory. And they have to see it to believe it. By giving more examples it helps reader understand where he’s coming from and agree with his topic.

When Botstein mentions that “teachers may find themselves spending more than half the year teaching specifically for test” I think he is assuring that this is undesirable. For the reason it might cause problem with time issue, knowing that not everyone learns quick enough and that many might have problems in one topic and the others might have problem in another. These might be a problem while trying to teach the kids for a test on time ready and to get a good passing grade.

Time issue might be a good cause because a test is know to be around the corner and you as a teacher have to know exactly what to teach in time for everyone to learn for that test. Many time we have holidays or teachers work days that make it harder for the time limit and leaving kids incomplete. Other times it can be the hours that the student has in class, the majority of the time kids only have and hour or so in a class, not enough to teach many things. By the time all the students are in and you take role and you go over the last week assignments to make sure everyone understood you lost half of the class time.

Not every one is the same. There for many students can be quick learners than the other. Some kids are known to learn things right away while others need time and dedications. This makes students frustrated and intimated when it comes to testing. For the reason the teachers have to try to have all the class ready at the same time and while others student that are ready has to hold back or waste time for those who aren’t.

When it comes of wasting times to get students for the test, I believe Botstien is right. While trying to tech a test that you don’t even know that’s going to be helpful for the next level, your loosing many valuable time and money. I think they should teach what should help you understand the subject of now to get you ready for the next not a test to tell you if your ready or not.

When Botstien clearly disapproves of class rooms teaching based on “forced adherence to bland state - approved textbook” I think he assuring that all calls room teaching suffers from this fault. I think I text book doesn’t help you very much and at times many teachers don’t even use it. Iv also noticed that at sometimes even some of the answers are wrong. Back in high school all these problem or another would occur.

I think text book doesn’t help you very much because if you got the wrong or right answer and doesn’t explain to you why or how you got that answer. Unlike a computer you can research and is like a professor explaining to you step by step. In a text book it shows you a couple of examples and from them you have to assume how it was perform. Like I’ve said before not everyone has the same learning order some could use a book other need a tutor to help them do so.

I’ve had teachers who has even touched the books. I would just leave it at home and not even bother taking it to school. Many teachers has creative strategies by using computers, videos, or performances to help out the students. I think this is a better way cause it helps the student interact with the class and yet not be bored and want to leave.

As for the text book being wrong. There’s been times that one or more students have the correct answer but yet it doesn’t match the text books. And at times the teachers reply is “the text book has an error”. how would that be possible if these are book that are suppose to teach us, not us to them. Than again a human made or wrote that book so there for is not perfect. But overcoming it all we at times might being learning something wrong that in the near future will confuse us with our other work.

Botstien reply to the compliant that he never tells the reader what the point of test is and what advantages it has to over come an educational regimes, with no testing what so ever, is that kids might learn more, and not be so eagle to drop out or give up. These can be points that would over to have no testing.

I think with out a test kids would learn more because they would have more time to focus in variety of things and not specific things that are given out in a test. I think kids would not have to be intimated when it comes to learning or passing the semester. speaking for myself many times I can know my subject, but yet when a test comes my mind goes blank. At times I can over come this other times I fail the test and earn a bad grade for it. This shouldn’t even be an issue because a little test. Many times kids even cheat in test and there passing with out knowing anything. How would this help them later on in the future. At times they might cheat not because there lazy, but maybe they just don’t understand the work and for they wont fail the cheat.

When at times kids are giving test in order to graduate or not this makes them really nervous. Many kids after the first time quite and drop out of school, and many of those kids turn out to be delinquents when reality there bright and smart kids. A test can determine a persons life and yet not have nothing to do with them. So when he argues with no testing not because I’m only a student and see it upon myself, but because I have friends that have been to a similar situation (I said earlier), dropped out of school and now have kids with a part time job not making enough not even for the rent. All this because a test.

If I was the editor and I would print out one of these letter the letter I would choose would have to be the first one , where it explains that a test doesn’t improve the person you are. It also only “measures a small portion of a child’s intellectual”. This one caught my attention because it over comes who is the person in reality and it doesn’t teach you much and it measures in a destructive manner.

When she brought to my attention that she’s a mother of three kids , for starters she knows what she’s talking about and she’s had some experiences. I would have to agree that a test doesn’t improve who you are. It doesn’t teach how to become a better person. A test measures you or who your “suppose” to be, other smart or in need of help. It just lowers your self esteem and doesn’t bring out the best of you.

Also the test might show a portion of your smartness depending at the test, but in real life maybe you have another ability that the test doesn’t show you. You might be good in reading and maybe not so good in math. A test would not help you out with that and ho can both can relate and help you. It also doesn’t guide you to a future reference. It doesn’t show up when you need a job like she mentions in her letter.

I support her every evidence and would gladly print her article fir the news paper. She makes her points and lets us know how a test only not measures for education, but in the real world as well. I hope her point of view is brought up sooner or later to readers.

When she says that tests “encourage students to exert more effort” I think she means that they devote this extra effort in trying to be better. I think she means that when a students sees that they failed in a test, they want or make effort not to fail again. And this helps out because they were given a test.

I think they are trying to get better because they noticed that they probably didn’t out so much dedication in studying, so now they know next time if they don’t want to fail, they would have to put more effort into it. In a way that motivates them to know how they are doing in the class and it would be a challenge of whose doing better and whose not. In the end maybe the feel proud to know how much they accomplish by studying and receiving a good grade for it.

It also helps with the extra help because if they failed they would want to know why and seeing them selves near there classmates it would to put them in a category alike to them. So would give that little extra effort in doing so. It also would help there mind be entertain with school work and for other classes ot would be a lesson not to get laid back again.

That’s what think when she mentioned that comment. This would only realte to me because I’ve been through and these were the reason why I improved in my test. I wouldn’t want to be left out. So therefore I’m sure she thought the same way when mentioning it.

Defamation law is our legal system’s attempt to reconcile the mutually incompatible interests of freedom of speech and protection of reputation. In the modern” information age”, a third interest must also be recognised that of the public receiving accurate information from the mass media. This seems like a relatively straightforward concept. In reality, the application and interaction of Australian defamation law only unleashes a barrage of complex questions. This can be emphasised through an analysis of the John Marsden defamation case.

In theory the law of defamation does have an honourable purpose. There has been much discussion about the intention of defamation law and its underlying aims and objectives. The matter has been put to rest by the High Court describing three purposes of granting damages in a claim of defamation “ The three purposes are consolation for the personal distress and hurt caused to the appellant by the publication, reparation for the harm done to the appellant’s personal (if relevant) business reputation, and vindication of the appellant’s reputation.” However, in practice Australia’s defamation laws do not function well. In fact, it has been claimed that “ its main effect is to hinder free speech and protect powerful people from scrutiny (Martin, 18, p 107).

Indeed, defamation law is highly controversial. Most defamation actions involve media outlets, and thus tend to be widely reported in the media. News, current affairs and other media coverage tend to focus on a relatively small proportion of the population politicians, business people, entertainers and so on. As a result, such people are more likely to be defamed. Occasionally they sue. Because they are famous their defamation suits are also reported. Consequently, defamation is probably one of the best-known non-criminal areas of the law.

Nevertheless, the intricacies of defamation law are not well understood. Myths abound; only some have a basis in legal or practical reality. The law is complex and the precise details of its operation can occupy the time of lawyers and courts for weeks. The basic issues involved are more easily comprehended. The tort of defamation prevents publication of material which ‘ tends to injure the personal, professional, trade or business reputation of an individual or a company, to expose them to ridicule or to cause people to avoid them.

Defamation can take the form of either libel or slander. Slander is a defamatory statement in a non-permanent form, usually spoken. Libel is a defamatory statement in permanent form such as writing, printed material, film, video, audio recording, or even sculpture. In media interviews a journalist should be careful to avoid making slanderous statements. In addition, a journalist should be careful that any background materials such as reports, briefing notes or letters do not contain libelous material. For instance, a letter containing allegations of impropriety or poor conduct sent to an individual of whom the allegations are made is not libelous because the communication is private. No other party has been exposed to the statement and, therefore, no defamation has taken place. However, if the letter was provided to a third party such as the media, the subject of the letter could sue for libel.

Gross defamations include allegations of criminality, dishonesty, fraud, untruthfulness, immorality or disloyalty to ones country. Other lesser defamations include suggestions that a person is unfit for an office lacks qualifications or competence in a trade or profession (e.g. calling a doctor a quack or a real estate person a charlatan), or alleging a person or business is financially unsound.

It is important to recognise that defamation can be made directly (such as calling a person a fraud or a crook) or by imputation. For example, saying a painting is a fake, is by imputation, defamatory of the artist who produced the work even if you never used his or her name, as the statement reflects on the artists professionalism.

Defamation law varies considerably between countries. In the US, strong in the public interest provisions apply which allow potentially defamatory statements to be made publicly if they pertain to a matter deemed to be in the public interest. Public interest has been interpreted very broadly in the US and there is almost open season on public officials and public figures in both the US and the UK. Also, truth is a defence against defamation in many countries.

Differences in defamation laws in Australia or Asia or South Africa are relevant to companies in the US, UK and Europe, and vice versa, in todays Information Age. With communications through international media and increasingly via the Internet, material can be published globally. Even if your comments are legal in one country, they may be defamatory in another with stricter laws and you could be sued internationally. So understanding the ground rules on defamation law in a number of countries is important for media spokespersons.

Australian defamation law is highly complex with eight different jurisdictions (six States and two Territories) each with its own law and widely differing provisions. As a general rule, Australian laws against defamation are far more stringent and defences are much narrower than those available in the US and other countries. For instance, truth is not a defence on its own in most cases in Australia (Sawer, 168, p. 18).

In most Australian jurisdictions defamation law is a mixture of statute and common law. The law is far from uniform from State to State. In 17 the Australian Law Reform Commission recommended numerous changes to the law of defamation including introducing a uniform defamation law for all of Australia. Despite attempts to bring such law into effect, this has not occurred nationally, although three states (New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland) adopted uniform laws in 1.

Because of the lack of uniformity between States and territories in Australia, a statement published or broadcast by national media can be the subject of legal action in any one or all of the jurisdictions. Potential suitors have a choice of jurisdictions and can bring an action in the one that best suits their case. Thus, a statement made in an interview in Sydney could be the subject of a defamation action in Western Australia or Queensland.

The Australian Government has moved to reform its complex defamation laws to provide uniformity and provisions more in line with other modern industrialised countries, but this has proved to be a long and laborious process due to Federal-State politics and significant differences of opinion between legal experts, media proprietors and social reformers. In the meantime, Australian defamation laws are, in the words of Brian Martin, an unholy mess and any spokesperson talking to the media needs to be wary of making defamatory statements which could lead to legal action resulting in significant damages settlements. (Martin, 18, p. )

The question of whether Australian defamation law performs its role well can be answered through the application of the John Marsden defamation case. On Wednesday 7, 001, Solicitor John Marsden was awarded $500,000 in damages after winning Australias longest running defamation case, in the New South Wales Supreme Court. The finding for the 5yearold former Law Society President and Police Board member came after a jury found in 1 Marsden had been defamed by two Seven Network broadcasts which claimed he had sex with underage boys. The case against Channel Seven centered on two broadcasts on the “Witness” program that suggested that the flamboyant Mr.Marsden had paid under-aged boys for sex.

Justice Levine ruled Mr. Marsden had a good and settled reputation before the publication of the false imputations and awarded him $55,000. The judge said he was satisfied on the balance of probabilities that the alleged events did not occur, adding Channel Seven was acted with malice. Justice David Levine found those allegations were grave, false, defamatory ... and actuated by malice.

The victory clearly came at a staggering price, after 14 days of hearings, which included graphic descriptions of gay sex acts. Mr. Marsden said the case had taken over six years and cost him $6 million in legal expenses. John Marsden admitted after the judgment that he would be forever tainted by the false claim” and that “the result had totally vindicated his stand against the allegations”. Alas, according to Mr. Marsden, his victory had come at a high price and his reputation would be forever tainted. Mr. Marsden said he despaired for the future of law in Australia and the way in which socalled justice is administered.

Although I have won I have lost, he said.

But more importantly society has lost. This case should serve as warning to every person here today, to every family and to every politician that the price of justice in Australia today has become so expensive that most people simply cannot afford it.

There are several fundamental flaws in the Australian legal system, including cost, selective application and complexity. Firstly, cost is a relevant issue when analysing the problems associated with defamation law. If sued for defamation, one could end up paying tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees, even in the event of winning a case. The large costs, due especially to the cost of legal advice, mean that most people never sue for defamation. Cases can go on for years, only creating enormous legal costs which could then lead to appeals. According to Brian Martin, author of “Information liberation”, the result is that defamation law is often used by the rich and powerful to deter criticisms.”

Brian Martin states that the “ power behind defamation law is corrupting, which explains why it is so difficult to make even minor reforms to the law to benefit those with little power or wealth.” In Australia, the newspapers and broadcasters are presently large corporations with substantial legal services at their disposal. Cyberspace allows individuals wide publication to a national and even international audience. The vast majority of these people have neither access to lawyers skilled in navigating the intricacies of such laws nor resources to compensate a person who is harmed by their statements. In short, only those wit money, and lots of it, need apply.

The unpredictability, complexity, and slowness of the application of Australian defamation law also raises a host of questions about the effectiveness of defamation law. People say and write defamatory things all the time, but only very few are threatened with lawsuits. Sometimes gross libels pass unchallenged while comparatively innocuous comments lead to major court actions. The complexity of defamation law is also a hindrance to its effectiveness. It is so complex that most writers prefer to be safe than sorry. They might refrain from publishing things that are quite appropriate, and thus inhibit the right of free speech. In addition, those who might desire to defend against a defamation suit without a lawyer are deterred by the complexities of defamation law.

The words of John Marsden himself exemplify the complexities of defamation law. Although Mr.Marsden won his case, he came out clearly the loser as well. If defamation law is intended to protect people from having their reputations unfairly sullied, it did not perform its role in this case. One must question the freedom the media, which allows the press to irreparably annihilate an individual’s reputation without proper investigation. However, the law did recognise that Channel Seven was in the wrong therefore it must be acknowledged that in a certain respect it did vindicate John Marsden. This is the paradox of Australian defamation law.

Many people agree that Australian defamation law should be changed. However few agree on how it should be changed. It is not surprising that such a vital and controversial area of law should continue to invite such scrutiny. The balance, which it strikes between such important competing interests; the fundamental right of freedom of speech and the protection of a person’s reputation, must continue to be reassessed.

Government should not fund any scientific research whose consequences, either medical or ethical, are unclear

In asserting that scientific research, whose consequences are unclear, should not be supported by government, the author fails to acknowledge that it is not fair to give up searching for the cure of the century’s diseases such as AIDS by saying the research consequences are unclear. However, I agree with the statement to the extent that there are many important issues, which government must find a solution for it, such as pollution.

As the population of world increases without control, there are many important topics, which governments of all countries need to pay careful attention (must yerine bunu kullaniyorsun afferim). Pollution, traffic, sports facilities, jobless people, homeless people, uneducated people, the youth lost in sex and drug market are a few examples among these topics. A more problematic issue is that if governments do not take precaution for these issues, tomorrow would be harder than today to solve these problems. Therefore, it would be wiser to invest in these kinds of topics, which have clear solution, instead of funding several research areas, on which we do not expect good results with a big probability. A dramatic result could be obtained when a comparison of how much money the world lost for not solving the above mentioned topics and for funding scientific researches, which did not give clear results.

On the other hand, the century’s diseases such as AIDS do harm the economy of all of the countries in the world as well as do harm the lives of many families. A cure in AIDS would save billions of dollars in the world. For now, a research, which do not give meaningful results to us, might be meaningful to us with the next research results combined. Therefore, if the world’s best professionals want to work on AIDS for curing, the required fund could be reserved for them in some proper amount.

In some cases, the results of a study which was made decades ago could be used for today. For example, a coding theory took a very important place because of the high-tech computers. A mathematician, who wrote a paper about a new coding method, could not simulate his theory due to inadequate computer processer speeds. Later on, that theory was simulated by another person and that person became a very famous. Therefore, no one can know, whether the unclear results of a research could be clear in future or not. This means that a fund for research might be reserved all time whenever possible even if the results of that research are unclear.

In sum, a scientific research could be funded even if it has unclear results because nobody can know it would be a very useful result in the near future. In addition, the century’s diseases, such as AIDS, cause amazing damage to the world’s economy and any research made on AIDS could increase our chance to save us billions of dollars. On the other hand, there are many important topics, which world needs to solve immediately because every passing day, it would be harder to deal with those problems, such as pollution, jobless people, homeless people etc.

David Smith, born in 106 in Decatur, Indiana; originally learned to weld steel in a Studebaker factory before moving to New York where he then began to study art. David Smith is mostly know and associated with abstract expression; also, being one of the first contributors to Modern art by paving the way in welding steel sculptures by transforming the standard industrial method of molding steel into creative art. Although, he created many abstract paintings, his contemplation of the flatness in the work area for painting lead him to project his painting into three dimensional welded sculptures in the early 10’s. [Slate, Geosites.]

I consider David Smith’s work to be eccentric, because his work consisted of many different objects. For example, steel, silver, bronze, wood, and even coral from which he picked from the ocean in his work. [slate.] Dave Smith’s sculptures varied in size, but the majority was large, some of his sculptures serve as monuments in many places, and the workspace needed to create his sculptures were factories, warehouses and the outdoors. [npg.]

Dave Smith completed 8 works in his last series of monumental abstract structures, the Cubis, before his death in May 165. Smith believed that steel offered unique qualities because of its economical ability to be created into different forms unlike any other material. Smith further believed that since the metal possessed little art history, what associations metal did possess are of this century power, structure, movement, progress, suspension, destruction, brutality. [guggenheimer.]

Some of the Cubis are vaguely figural, while others, such as Cubi XXVII, suggest architecture. This example is one of three Cubis usually referred to as “Gates” (although Smith called them “arches”), which rise like giant rudimentary doorways framing a central void. By counterbalancing a cylinder that appears to rest precariously on edge with two small tilted blocks that look equally unstable. [guggenheimer.] In Cubis XXVI Smith highlights the possible force obtained through the welding method. The Cubis XXVI crafted, assembled and polished by the artist was meant to rely on the reflective power of light in order to express the dynamic equilibrium between the geometrical components and upward and outward thrust of its composition. [guggenheimer.]

Two Circle Sentinel, 161 Stainless steel, 86 x 71/4 x 15 /4 inches (left side)

Two Circle Sentinel exhibits the mastery and delicacy that Smith brought to his later steel constructions. He began to use burnished stainless steel in isolated examples in the 140s, but it became his preferred medium only in the late 150s. The image of the sentinel, or watcher, was a theme that fascinated Smith. [misterluke.] The image of the sentential almost resembles a human warrior gatekeeper. The anatomical references are handled with grace and wit the open circle that crowns the work can be read as either a head or an eye; the lower circle evokes the curve of a feminine breast or hip. The various planes of the figure capture light and shadow, and each facet of the burnished surface is immediately responsive to every nuance of illumination. The artist later commented on this series, They have an odd atmosphere of grandeur and, at the same time, delight. Created for out-of-doors installation, Two Circle Sentinel was placed first on a hillside by Smith at his farm in Bolton Landing, New York. In the Cullen Sculpture Garden, it is one of the first works that greets the visitor entering through the Bissonnet Street gate [misterluke.]

David Smith, who was influenced by Cubism, Constructivism, and Surrealism allowed a lot of his monumental steel and iron sculptures’ characters and forms to continue his free-flowing and unstructured approach from the beginning to the end of his career.

Athens was a burgeoning democracy and has just been through the ‘glory days’ of Pericles (440BC). They have just fought the Peloponnesian war against Sparta and its democracy is under threat.

Techniques

• He writes in first person, as he is defending himself.

• Uses a morality statement to begin

“Thou doest wrong to think that a man of any use at all is to weigh the risk of life and death, and not to consider one thing only, whether when he acts he does the right thing or the wrong, performs the deeds of a good man or bad…”

• He uses an active voice to accuse the jury of their misjudgment of him

“Thou doest wrong…”

• He uses conceits

 “If I should be found to be wiser than the multitude, it would be in this, that having no adequate knowledge of the beyond, I do not presume that I have it.”

 “So God bids, and I consider that never has a greater good been done to you, than through my ministry in the city.”

• Socrates takes the higher moral ground, as a means of criticising Anytus and those who accuse him. This can be seen in his use of conceits.

• He is on the offensive, (by offending the jury,) as opposed to the defensive, (which would be him defending himself.)

• He answers the charges that he is impious and that he corrupts the youth. He does these both in paragraph three, (“the perfection of the soul”.) This statement is also a conceit, (his way of “the soul” is perfect.)

• He refuses to change (“I shall not alter my canduct, no, not if I have to die a score of deaths.”)

• Socrates was an idealist, Anytus was a pragmatist

• Socrates uses polarised positions as seen when he calls Anytus impious; “I am pious in a way that Anytus isn’t because I believe in the gods truly and in human conscience, whereas Anytus is using a religious charge, pragmatically, to get rid of me.”

• He uses a humourous metaphor; “a kind of gadfly to a big generous horse, rather slow because of its very bigness and in need of being waked up”

Even Though Sex Can Be a Very Controversial Subject,

It Can Also be a Great Source of Humor

In today’s society, the twenty first century, sex can be a very uncomfortable

subject for people, not to mention authors, to talk and write about. However, I chose several authors who use sex in a humorous context using communication about sex, perception of sex, and exaggeration about sex. I chose the work of Stephen Sherrill in “Humor Thy Father,” Bill Scheft in “Rejected Celebrity Cab Announcements,” Prudence Crowther in “What We Told the Kids by Betty Markshuffle,” and Garry Trudeau in “I Am a Tip-Top Starlet,” all from my Mirth of a Nation textbook. I also used several examples from Dave Barry’s book, Big Trouble.

The way people communicate can be quite humorous to me, not to mention when the communication is taking place between parents and their children concerning the topic of sex. In “Humor Thy Father,” Stephen Sherrill talks about how hard it is for kids to explain sex to their parents rather than the parents having to explain sex to the kids. He writes, “First, you should know that it’s perfectly natural to feel uneasy talking about unconventional sex with your parents” (546). I found this funny because I can remember when my parents attempted to talk to me about sex, and I think I have never seen my parents so nervous and embarrassed in my life. On the other hand, in, “What We Told the Kids by Betty Markshuffle,” Prudence Crowther writes, “There was so much talk in

the papers of teachable moments that Russ and I began to feel we should prepare ourselves in case the kids started putting us on the spot about whatever they were picking up from their little friends or from the television” (146). I found this funny because the incident that the parents were talking about is the Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton scandal concerning the “cigar” and “sexual relations.” Luckily my parents never had to tell me about this incident because I don’t think it would have fit well with the birds and the bees.

Next, I found a hilarious quote from Bill Scheft in “Rejected Celebrity Cab Announcements” which concerns exaggeration that states, “This is Don Imus. Look, you never know when one of these hideous, fundamentalist, turban-wearing, curry-drenched weasels might start having sex with a goat in the front seat and wind up driving on the sidewalk, so remember to buckle your seat belt” (517-18). I certainly hope this is an exaggeration and not a regular practice of New York City cab drivers. Also, Dave Barry uses exaggeration in a campaign slogan that reads, “Get Hammered with Hammerhead” (78). The slogan was dealing with beer and I guess that this beer could make it easier for a person to have sex, but I am sure that it is not the only thing that contributes to the cause. It is a known fact that some people become more attractive when a person is under the influence of alcohol and possibly do other things that might make him or her regret drinking those beverages the next morning. I also do not think that people look at the “Huge gazombas,” that the “Stupid Client From Hell” wanted depicted in his slogan, and think that the beer tastes better.

Furthermore, people’s perception of sex can be quite hilarious sometimes. An

example of this would be in Gary Trudeau’s work, “I Am a Tip-Top Scarlet” when he states, “BLIKK O.K., here’s a question from left space What was your book Slut about? MADONNA It was called Sex, my book” (580). I interpreted this to basically say that the Budapest newspaper Blikk, perceived Madonna to be a slut. This tells me that Madonna is perceived in Budapest as a slut, when in all actuality I really don’t see her being one who gives herself away freely. Another example from Dave Barry would be from the name of one of his characters, “Walter Kramitz” (51). When we discussed this name in class, I found it hilarious when Jason Manley pointed out his perception of what Kramitz could signify. I believe that a better spelling of his last name would go Cram Its, because the police officer was quite the ladies man.

In conclusion, I would have to say that the way some people view sex is quite ridiculous, however, it continues to make us smile if not burst into laughter. Even the President of the United States is not safe from criticisms about his affair with Monica Lewinsky that had something to do with a cigar and penetrating some orifice of the body. I really don’t need to go into details, but I hope you can get the picture. Overall, I really enjoyed the novel by Dave Barry, not just the parts about sex, but the entire book. It didn’t even take me that long to finish it and once I picked it up it was extremely hard to put down.

The Reality of Reality TV

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like The Reality of Reality TV even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. What is reality TV really; there are many different views on this subject. Some say its dating and game shows. Some say it’s a way for ordinary people to become famous. The formal definition of reality is that it is the quality or state of being real. The definition of real is something that is genuine. However this is what I find ironic about reality TV shows. The name suggests that reality TV shows are shows about real life and real people. Yet most of the shows such as “Joe Millionaire”, “The Bachelor”, and “Paradise Hotel” just to name a few, are anything but real.

Early reality TV shows such as dating shows and game shows, for example “The Dating show” and “Jeopardy”, pioneered the way for a new kind of TV. This new style consisted of taking actual people, not actors, and putting them on TV and having them participate in contests. The enthusiasm of these shows slowly started to die down a bit, but then a new show called “Survivor” spawned a new and exciting side to reality TV. In the reality TV show “Survivor”, regular people are put on an island and have to survive and each week they have to vote someone off the show. Whoever is left at the end wins a million dollars. This new element of fear and exhilaration provided audiences with another aspect to like about reality TV. Ever since then there have been a lot of spin offs of “Survivor” like “Fear Factor” and “Dog eat dog.” Another type of reality TV show is where someone who is rich and tries to find love and he/she has about 0 people to choose from. Examples of these shows are “The bachelor”, “Mr. Personality”, and “Joe Millionaire.”

One reality TV show, “Joe Millionaire”, where a man who is not rich in real life is portrayed as inheriting a fortune and then wants to choose a soul mate. Then 0 women from all over the U.S. are invited to compete for his attention thinking that he has inherited 50 million dollars. During the show these 0 women compete for Joe’s love or money. (www.realitytvlinks.com)

This show is one of the shows that I believe is nowhere near close to being called a reality show. No one has 0 women to choose from and the contestants aren’t even real. They use beautiful people for the show, not regular people. This is also not how you would want to choose a soul mate in real life. Now if the so called “Joe Millionaire” picks the wrong girl and chooses a gold digger instead of a woman who will love him for who he is, he has to face the fact that he picked the wrong girl and he will end up back at his old job and that he probably eliminated someone else who loved him for who he was.

Now there is a new season of “Joe Millionaire” where they travel to Europe, and the girls there haven’t heard of the show “Joe Millionaire” before. In this season the girls think the guy is worth $80 million. (www.fox.com)

These new reality shows are different from past reality shows in that they involve more of a fantasy facet. These reality TV shows can be harmful because it can influence the people that watch the show. They might get caught up in all the hysteria and won’t be able to separate the real from the fake. These shows can also have a positive side to them. Such reality TV shows as “American Idol” can have a good outcome for the winners of the contest. However there can only be one winner. This is also where another negative part can come in as well. The contestants might lose faith if they are not chosen or if they didn’t win. Also the contestants that lose face public humiliation because they were on national TV. An example of how getting kicked off the show can affect someone is “A contestant of the Swedish version of Big Brother threw himself in front of a train after being voted off. But, the shows top exec said, He would have done it anyway. Obviously, contestant screening is a smart idea.” (Pellegrini, Time Magazine)

Joel a contestant on “Survivor” who was voted out knows the price you pay for chauvinism if you say it on TV. After he was kicked off he was quoted saying, “If the tribe says Im a loser, then I must be a loser, and when people see me on the street theyre going to tell me so, again and again, until I start to cry. Im a bad, bad person, and now, thanks to Reality TV, everybody knows it.” (Pellegrini, Time Magazine)

An alternative to these reality TV shows can be a REAL reality TV show. This is where they will show real people in real places and how they live. This REAL reality show will not be where they go into a millionaire’s mansion and goes around and document his life and all his riches. This REAL reality TV show will be where they go to poverty-stricken countries and show the rest of the world how the other side lives. This way it can inspire some people to make a difference in the world.

In conclusion, today’s reality TV shows are just for entertainment and shouldn’t be taken anymore further than that. With the abundance of reality TV shows today they are bound to go out of style.

As You Like It

One of the many reoccurring themes in As You Like It is romantic love. The book gives many examples of love that is expressed dramatically and at some points magnified. Many relationships throughout the book reflect the meaning of romantic love. The play explores the structures and forms of love. Each character has their own thoughts and feelings on romantic love and express it in their own way. It [love] is to be all made of sighs and tears (5..74)

Rosalind and Celia have a relationship that is unique and they express their love for one another in a different way. They are described as to sharing a love “dearer than the natural bond of sisters” (1..44) and “never two ladies loved as they do.” (1.1.7) They show their care for each other in action. When Rosalind is banished by Duke Fredrick, Celia says that in banishing Rosalind, Duke Fredrick, has also banished Celia. She announces that where Celia goes she will follow. “She (Celia) would have followed her (Rosalind’s) exile, or have died to stay behind her.” (1.14-5)

Though they seem like they have a good relationship they must become separated before they can learn to love properly, and become independent women. Celia at the beginning of the play is lost. She is not able to survive without Rosalind. One of the reasons for banishing Rosalind is to force Celia to become her own women and depend on herself and not Rosalind.

Duke Frederick tells her, Thou art a fool. She [Rosalind] robs thee of thy name (1..74). In they play he seems to be the only one to realize that Celia needs to grow up and the way of doing this would be to get Rosalind out of the way. The forest actually serves to separate them and in the end allowing them to end up independent.

The main couple in As You Like It are Rosalind and Orlando. They both have different views on love. Orlando thinks that true love is when you’re with the person you love and you can’t live without them. Rosalind thinks that if Orlando really did love her and appreciate her he would spend every minute with her.

Orlando professed his love for Rosalind by running around carving poetic verses admiring Rosalind into trees all over the forest. The behavior in which Orlando acts is traced back to romantic love, in which he longs and reaches out for a perfect and unobtainable woman. Rosalind finds his poetry to be horrible and lacking seriousness. She can observe the poor worth of the poetry and it shows that she witnesses the odd things love encourages.

This is Rosalind’s first step away from her protected life in the court. She must risk everything in order to advance her love. Duke Frederick made it easier for her when he banishes her now she has nothing to lose. She is able to leave the secure court system and enter the woods and eventually win Orlando as hers.

In this play nearly every character is in love with someone. Love is expressed though deep speeches and characters openly professing love for each other. What makes it romantic love is that somebody can fall madly in love with a person and marry him or her the next day. This shows that there is no doubt in their love for each other and it intensifies the meaning. These parts in the play make it seem less real but make it more impressive.

Romantic love is a unique emotional state of intense excitement, great calm, or enhanced well being in the presence of the other (Liebowitz, 18). Each character no matter how they express their love they all come back to that definition. The play shows many situations, which are good examples of romantic love and makes the book seem more real.
