Electra is the one who saves Orestes from Clytaemnestra and Aegisthus who are plotting to killing him. She sends him away with the faithful Guardian, so that one day Orestes will be able to come back and avenge his father’s death. Avenging his father’s death is something that Electra is unable to accomplish herself.


Electra had the largest part in the play, and had a wild personality. She made the play interesting. There was no real way to expect what she was going to say or do. Orestes was less exciting; he came to town to avenge his father’s death, kill Clytaemnestra and Aegisthus, and nothing more. There was not much emotion shown by Orestes, while Electra showed every emotion possible, from being depressed, to ecstatic. I was able to get a clear picture of Electra in my mind about what she would look like, and how she was feeling, but it was the opposite with Orestes.


In the play, Electra is the one who would be the most affected by the death of Clytaemnestra and Aegisthus. Orestes could have continued to live a normal life, hidden away by his sister, and never would have been found by Clytaemnestra and Aegisthus. Electra, would have been murdered by Clytaemnestra and Aegisthus if Orestes had not returned to avenge his father’s death. Therefore, it is clear that Electra is the main character.
