Rudolfo Anaya’s compelling book, Bless Me, Ultima is abundant with symbols. Some symbols are mentioned quite often and their meanings are stated, but some are more discrete and their meanings are deeper. Rosie’s is a whore house which lies in the middle of the town, and is often the center of their controversial conversation in the story. There are numerous meaning of Rosie’s, but I believe that the major ones are; misunderstanding, curiosity, temptation, and confusion. These four emotions are generally happening through out the entire book, but are usually somehow related to Rosie’s.
“I knew that Rosie was evil, not evil like a witch, but evil in other ways.”pg.4 Rosie’s represents sin and misunderstanding. Antonio’s mom is absolutely disgusted by Rosie’s, in fact she even makes Antonio bow his head in disrespect whenever he walks past the old tattered building. Antonio has been told what is “good” and what is “evil” his whole life has been very shallow and filtered and Rosie’s is another example of how ignorant Antonio is to other’s beliefs at the beginning of the book. Rosie’s represents and evil of his Catholic religion. Maria despised Rosie’s because it was a place for adult men to go. She hated the idea of her children, especially Antonio, to become adults because she believes they won’t be innocent anymore. Another reason for Maria’s deep hatred of the brothel is probably because the priest who led the Lunas into El Puerto was actually their father, which means that he had violated the priest’s law of celibacy. Maria deeply wants Antonio to stay innocent and pure and become a priest.
Thoughts of Rosie’s enter and posses Antonio’s dreams. The women working inside of Rosie’s catch Antonio’s eyes, and for a moment there Antonio was even tempted to enter. The three giants say that is the Marez blood inside of him. Tempted as Antonio may be, he thinks of his planned destiny and refuses and even tries to convince his brother’s not to enter the house of hell. Finally his older brother Andrew says that he would not enter until Antonio lost his innocence. Rosie’s place is a place of great curiosity and temptation to the weaker side of Antonio, he knows he must not enter, but yet he yearns to. Rosie’s also stands for lose of innocence. Antonio is very perplexed in his dream when Andrew tells him that he will eventually loose his innocence, and no later than his first communion. “You are innocent until you understand, the priest of the church said, and you will understand good and evil when the communion is placed in your mouth and God fills your body.” pg. 71.
Ernie and Antonio get into a fight at school and Ernie announces that Andrew has been frequenting Rosie’s. Antonio can’t believe him because that would mean he doesn’t have his innocence anymore. Antonio decides to follow Narsisco to Rosie’s and when he heard Narsisco ask for Andrew, and when Andrew came to the door Antonio became very distraught. Antonio was so venerable empty when he discovered that he had lost his innocence and he wanted to know how and when it happened. “I felt very feverish now. I felt weak and useless. I remembered the day my brothers left for the big city , how they shouted about coming here before they left. And Andrew always lingering here, not telling my mother who his girl was, all seemed to fit. And I remembered my dream, Andrew had said that he would not enter the house of the naked women until I had lost my innocence.” pg. 164-165. More questions stir in Antonio’s head when he thinks of Rosie’s, it represents the unknown to Antonio, everything that he doesn’t understand about good and evil lies behind the doors of Rosie’s, a most peculiar place indeed, but an appropriate place.

Each person in the story related to Rosie’s in their own way. For some it is a beacon of misunderstanding, or, confusion, maybe for others temptation and curiosity. Antonio is affected by Rosie’s and all of it’s many meanings, the eternal Luna-Marez conflict going on inside of his head. Antonio has a hard time decided what is “good” and what is “evil” anymore. Rosie’s is very ambiguous places with many desalinate meanings. These meaning which can never be, but weren’t necessarily meant to be totally understood, especially by Antonio. Antonio’s growing knowledge and understanding strikes many questions that lay unanswered, but sometime there just isn’t an answer to a question.
