What does “real presence” mean?

When Catholics talk about the presence of Jesus in the wine and bread there are many viewpoints. Some may say that Jesus is not really transformed from the bread and wine, but is a symbol of Jesus. They also say that the substance of the wine and bread do not change, but they are a “sign of a sacred reality.” Berenger of Tours first brought up this theory on Eucharist and he used the Augustine definition of a sacrament. Many of those that believe that Eucharist is only a symbol rely on their senses to guide them through life. I look at the timeline and story about Berenger and cannot help, but be mad. Knowing that he had different opinions about transubstantiation and going far enough as to write them down he should have the courage to stand up for what he thought was right instead of backing down each time he was questioned.

Another way that Catholics look at Eucharist is that the bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of Christ through the words of consecration. This theology is the one that the Catholic Church stands by and is they way that they teach it today. The word use to define what happens when the bread and wine become the body and blood is transubstantiation. This word was first used in writings of Magister Roland in as early as 1150 and has been used in the Catholic theology since then.

I believe that the bread and wine at Mass that we receive is actually the blood and body of Christ. The Eucharist that Catholics receive is not a symbol, but truly is Christ.

If this is what the Catholic teaching is then why do so many people belief that it is just a symbol of Christ? Not all people of the same religion believe the same thing, but still remain in the same religion. There are many reason why people choice to be Catholic, because their parents are, they always have been, or because they actually belief in God and believe that every time we go to Mass we eat His body and drink His blood. Some may be like Berenger and rely on their sense to guide them, but when it comes to religion and God faith is needed. Faith is believing in something that you cannot see and knowing that He is there and not just a symbol.
