What is reality TV really; there are many different views on this subject. Some say its dating and game shows. Some say it’s a way for ordinary people to become famous. The formal definition of reality is that it is the quality or state of being real. The definition of real is something that is genuine. However this is what I find ironic about reality TV shows. The name suggests that reality TV shows are shows about real life and real people. Yet most of the shows such as “Joe Millionaire”, “The Bachelor”, and “Paradise Hotel” just to name a few, are anything but real.

Early reality TV shows such as dating shows and game shows, for example “The Dating show” and “Jeopardy”, pioneered the way for a new kind of TV. This new style consisted of taking actual people, not actors, and putting them on TV and having them participate in contests. The enthusiasm of these shows slowly started to die down a bit, but then a new show called “Survivor” spawned a new and exciting side to reality TV. In the reality TV show “Survivor”, regular people are put on an island and have to survive and each week they have to vote someone off the show. Whoever is left at the end wins a million dollars. This new element of fear and exhilaration provided audiences with another aspect to like about reality TV. Ever since then there have been a lot of spin offs of “Survivor” like “Fear Factor” and “Dog eat dog.” Another type of reality TV show is where someone who is rich and tries to find love and he/she has about 0 people to choose from. Examples of these shows are “The bachelor”, “Mr. Personality”, and “Joe Millionaire.”

One reality TV show, “Joe Millionaire”, where a man who is not rich in real life is portrayed as inheriting a fortune and then wants to choose a soul mate. Then 0 women from all over the U.S. are invited to compete for his attention thinking that he has inherited 50 million dollars. During the show these 0 women compete for Joe’s love or money. (www.realitytvlinks.com)

This show is one of the shows that I believe is nowhere near close to being called a reality show. No one has 0 women to choose from and the contestants aren’t even real. They use beautiful people for the show, not regular people. This is also not how you would want to choose a soul mate in real life. Now if the so called “Joe Millionaire” picks the wrong girl and chooses a gold digger instead of a woman who will love him for who he is, he has to face the fact that he picked the wrong girl and he will end up back at his old job and that he probably eliminated someone else who loved him for who he was.

Now there is a new season of “Joe Millionaire” where they travel to Europe, and the girls there haven’t heard of the show “Joe Millionaire” before. In this season the girls think the guy is worth $80 million. (www.fox.com)

These new reality shows are different from past reality shows in that they involve more of a fantasy facet. These reality TV shows can be harmful because it can influence the people that watch the show. They might get caught up in all the hysteria and won’t be able to separate the real from the fake. These shows can also have a positive side to them. Such reality TV shows as “American Idol” can have a good outcome for the winners of the contest. However there can only be one winner. This is also where another negative part can come in as well. The contestants might lose faith if they are not chosen or if they didn’t win. Also the contestants that lose face public humiliation because they were on national TV. An example of how getting kicked off the show can affect someone is “A contestant of the Swedish version of Big Brother threw himself in front of a train after being voted off. But, the shows top exec said, He would have done it anyway. Obviously, contestant screening is a smart idea.” (Pellegrini, Time Magazine)

Joel a contestant on “Survivor” who was voted out knows the price you pay for chauvinism if you say it on TV. After he was kicked off he was quoted saying, “If the tribe says Im a loser, then I must be a loser, and when people see me on the street theyre going to tell me so, again and again, until I start to cry. Im a bad, bad person, and now, thanks to Reality TV, everybody knows it.” (Pellegrini, Time Magazine)

An alternative to these reality TV shows can be a REAL reality TV show. This is where they will show real people in real places and how they live. This REAL reality show will not be where they go into a millionaire’s mansion and goes around and document his life and all his riches. This REAL reality TV show will be where they go to poverty-stricken countries and show the rest of the world how the other side lives. This way it can inspire some people to make a difference in the world.

In conclusion, today’s reality TV shows are just for entertainment and shouldn’t be taken anymore further than that. With the abundance of reality TV shows today they are bound to go out of style.

Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence.

--Vince Lombardi

Everyone’s life is full of countless opportunities. All you need to do to take advantage of these opportunities is to grab the bull by the horn and give it your all. Of course, to do this you need a little thing called self-confidence. I never really had much confidence growing up, and then high school hit me like a banshee out of hell. When I realized where I was, I knew I needed some type of confidence to face my fears and survive. It all started the first day of my four year high school career.

“Why don’t you go out for a sport?” my mom asked to me the week before school started.

“Maybe, I replied,” as I shrugged my shoulders and clicked on the TV.

Today I should thank her for asking me that question four years ago, because it changed my life. I was reluctant to play any sports in high school but decided to play so I could make my parents proud. Of course, when I said I was playing football she freaked out and thought I was going to get seriously hurt. That’s the way moms are.

The first day of football was the hardest thing I have ever been through. Being lonely and confused with no friends, I wanted to go home. Wearing the full black pads was the weirdest feeling ever. It constrained my body’s movement so much. . It was in the upper 0 degrees and my dark pads soaked up the sun’s rays like a sponge. I was ready to pass out. They put us through so many drills and so much running my legs hurt for weeks after. The first thing that came to my mind after the first day ended was “quit.” I could end all the pain and suffering and go home everyday after school and be a couch potato. But for some unknown reason to this day, I didn’t. For four long years I went to every single grueling practice and pushed forward. I wasn’t the biggest or strongest on the team, but that pushed me even harder to work with more determination. Playing in the big games with hundreds of fans screaming and cheering is a memory I will never forget. Making it to the playoffs my senior year was a sweet moment that would be hard to top. Now that it is all over, I miss playing dearly. Now I realize what football had really given me, a whole new confidence level. It had built my body physically as well as mentally. It showed off with four years of Academic All Conference Awards as well as being the strongest guy on the team. Friends were made and lost teamwork, loyalty, and motivation were all developed; and it was a once in a lifetime experience that will stay with me until my last down.

As everybody knows, friends are the foundation of high school. You rely on them for your troubles and inspirations. To fool around with and have memories with, to be

there when you need them and when they need you. Without them, you would have nothing. I thought I would have trouble making friends at a new school, fortunately, I

couldn’t have been more wrong. During the first year of football, all of us bonded, in and out of school. We all became buddies and did everything together. (As long as our moms could drive us there first) Then there was the girl stage. Let’s just say I’m still working on that. I wasn’t really a ladies man, especially after I went 0- when asking girls to my homecoming dance. I was turned down three times in a row, but at least I knew I had the confidence to ask the girls out. Then all of a sudden, a huge moment arrived. I somehow managed to be voted onto the 00 Streamwood Homecoming Court. Talk about a jaw dropping experience. I had to walk into the middle of the gym all by myself dressed in a heavy dark suit, (I hate them with a passion) and stand there for 10 minutes while they explained my life story. I know I turned tomato red and was shaking. It was the most nerve racking moment in my life. Everybody on the court was my friend, and even though I didn’t win, I was still happy to be voted on, and also glad that it was over.

The last main event of my high school days was also the craziest. I can’t even explain it in words. It all started when my friend Robyn asked me to be the 10th member in a talent show because only nine signed up. Being the nice guy I am, I agreed. Then as soon as she walked away I realized what I had said, and smacked myself in the face. Having a talent was something I was lacking, and plus it meant an audience, and I hate being in front of audiences. That’s when I began to freak out. Scrambling to find a talent and face my fear of audiences, the date grew closer. All of the contestants had to practice

an opening dance routine and explain our talents three days before the show began. I finally decided to do a comedy routine as my talent, while everyone else sang or played

an instrument. Then the day before the show, they decided my routine was inappropriate and I couldn’t do it. To tell you the truth, I wanted to either punch the teacher or else drop out. I had nothing left. Then the day of the show arrived. I was watching fear factor the night before and it hit me. My biggest talent isn’t dancing or singing, it’s eating, and I had a great idea. It was sick, but still great. Then the show finally began the exact announced time of 500 p.m. The opening dance was a huge success and was followed by uproars of laughter and applause. Then everyone did their usual singing and dancing talents. Then they announced my name. I strutted on stage dressed in a bright white and blazing gold pom outfit, including the pitch black gown part which was a little short. Don’t ask me why I wore that, but I did it just for laughs. I let out a huge sigh of relief when I saw that the stage lights had caused the audience to be blurred out. That way, I couldn’t see anyone at all. My assistants brought out a table and five bowls while I explained the talent to the audience. I couldn’t believe it; I actually was talking clearly and smoothly to a large group of people. Each bowl was filled with an unusual type of food, and I had to eat it all within a minute and a half. The bowls contained the following; five sardines, potted meat (a low quality type of spam), Alpo beef and liver dog food, five icky dirty worms, and five large size slimy goldfish. They started the clock and I shoved everything down, with the dog food by far being the worst because of the cold slimy taste and texture. It was an unexplainable feeling, the crowd was in uproars of cheers and groans, all the girls were ready to run out, while all the guys went nuts. Even though I didn’t win, it was still a victory for me as a conquered my fears of crowds and public speaking.

While some people say high school was the worst time of their life, I can say it was one of my best. My confidence level grew unexpectedly as well as everything I learned. Look out life, here I come. Playing football taught me teamwork, loyalty, hard work, and that trusting friends is crucial to succeed. It taught me that friends get you through the good and bad times, and they are always there when you need them. Also, I learned to accept being turned down, even though it was three times in a row. Without friends, life is just plain. The craziest moment was the talent show, when I learned to conquer one of my greatest fears. Speaking to the audience wasn’t as bad as I hyped it up to be, and I’m glad I succeeded in performing and speaking well. High School is always going to be the biggest confidence step in my life, and I’m glad I learned and realized what I can now do.

The Cultural Revolution was started in October 166. After the failures of previous political campaigns such as The Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution was created from the struggle of power between the Maoists and the opposing power from Liu Shao-chi and Deng Hsiao-ping. Encouraged by Mao and his wife Chiang Ching, young people and students were used as a political tool as they were most effect to Mao¡¦s question, How can I make the Cultural Revolution spread everywhere in China? The Red Guard Army was established to pursue the Revolution to the ¡§far corners of China¡¨. Schools were closed at that time and rather than learning, the ¡§Young Revolutionaries Generals¡¨ had traveled throughout China to reinforce Mao¡¦s thinking. To promote Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards did not only used slogans, posters, and speeches, from Mao, but also violent actions to every element that potentially opposed Mao¡¦s thinking such as the ¡§Four Olds¡¨ ¡V the old culture, old customs, old habits, and the old ways of thinking.

In the book ¡§Life and Death in Shanghai¡¨ by Nien Cheng, the issues including the dark side of Cultural Revolution were analyzed in detailed ways. Through Nien Cheng¡¦s heartbreaking memoir, the movement of Red Guards had not only driven herself and the capitalists into the victims¡¦ list, but the list had also included most of Chinese population as well as the Red Guards.

Nien Cheng belonged to the upper class in China before the Cultural Revolution. Being the ambassador between shell managers and the Chinese government, Nien Cheng could enjoy having a luxurious life, while most of the rich could not attain their lifestyles at that time. However, in the period of the Cultural Revolution, Nien Cheng, declared as a spy and the ¡§running dog¡¨ of the foreign imperialists, was the forced to attend series of struggle meetings and later even arrested to jail. The nightmare began through the anticipated visit by the Red Guards. Except in the room of Nien Cheng¡¦s daughter, Meiping, ¡§revolutionary action¡¨ was taken to every instance in the house. Furniture, paintings, jewelries, and other valuables were either damaged or taken away by the Red Guards. Her suffering had escalated further along with Cultural Revolution campaign after an article from the People¡¦s Daily was published

The article warned the ¡§revolutionary masses¡¨ that the capitalist class was cunning, and it made the allegation that its members hoarder gold and secreted weapons in their homes so that when an attack against China came from abroad they could cooperate with the enemy to become a fifth column.

As a result, more power was given to the ¡§revolutionary masses¡¨ and they had employed more violence attack. To search of ¡§gold and weapons¡¨ that Mao had asked for, a group of ¡§Proletarian Revolutionaries¡¨ came back to Nien Cheng¡¦s mansion. This time, they had applied a crueler destruction as she was beaten, whipped, and treated in an inhumanity way. Besides, she was not allowed to leave her house or to have conversations with her servants and daughter Later, Nien Cheng was taken to jail. For Meiping, she could no longer go back home but to stay in the ¡§cowshed¡¨, which was the Film Studio. It was because, she and the Studio were later removed from the ranks of ¡§masses¡¨ and became class enemy. Besides the financial lost Nien Cheng had, the Cultural Revolutionary had made her losing the most precious things on earth, which were her freedom and the life of Meiping, who were later beaten to death by the Red Guards.

Not only did the class enemies were tortured by the Red Guards, most of the people in China were having a hard time to compromise with their harsh creative standard. To be more ¡§revolutionary¡¨, every element on the streets was being altered. Each street¡¦s name was renamed to meaningful Mao¡¦s ideas such as ¡§Anti-Imperialist Street¡¨ and ¡§Revolutionary Boulevard¡¨. The order of the traffic lights was terminated, as the ¡§Young Revolutionaries¡¨ believed the color red should mean go instead of stop. Many inventories such as flowers, sofas, silks, and cosmetics were sabotaged either because they reflected Western styles or the goods were not suitable for ¡§socialist society¡¨. Furthermore, the Chinese could no longer have the right of religion. The Catholic Cathedral¡¦s twin spires and the temples had been dismantled. The Red Guards had followed Mao¡¦s order to stop superstitions. Sometimes, the Red Guards seized pedestrians who did not meet their standard. For example, Nien Cheng had witnessed a young lady, who belonged to the working class, was caught since they did not approve her a pointed shoes and slacks with narrow legs. Her pants and shoes were taken away as she was then humiliated and beaten by the Red Guards. Riders, who failed to demonstrate Mao¡¦s quote by putting the ¡§red cards¡¨ on their bicycles handles, were warned In some cases, the Red Guards¡¦ actions were so violent that some resisters were beaten and killed.

The Red Guards were the group that was affected most by the Cultural Revolution since they were the cores of Cultural Revolution. Being controlled and brainwashed by Mao, they were organized to fulfill his idea and to get rid of his enemies. Without any political knowledge, they blindly followed the directions from their leaders. As Nien Cheng¡¦s cook argued, ¡§¡K How could he not join? He would have been looked upon as renegade and punished. Besides, young people always want to do exactly what other young people are doing.¡¨ Therefore, they were not given any individual actions or the ability of personal judgment. Students no longer respected teachers, although teachers used to maintain a well-respected position in the Chinese society. The book had specified the attitude of the Red Guards towards their teachers

We beat them up when they are found to have capitalist ideas or when they insist we study and not have so many revolutionary activities. Some of them do not seem to understand the importance of carrying on with the Cultural Revolution. They still believe in the importance of learning from books¡K ¡KWe don¡¦t need the old style of school any more. Those teachers who still believe in books obviously oppose our Great Leader so we must treat them as enemies

However, not every ¡§Revolutionary¡¨ had followed the same beliefs as other did from the group thinking. For example, Nien Cheng had inspired a young guard when she was having breakfast. The girl would like study further in university and said, ¡§I hoped to go to a university when I finish high school. But now there won¡¦t be any university to go to. All of us young people will have to become soldiers¡¨. Like this thoughtful girl, thousands of the Red Guards had lost their chance of education during the Cultural Revolution because the schools were closed and teachers were discouraged. Nien Cheng gave another example of the internal conflict from the Red Guards. When she was being arrested, the girl, who guarded Cheng¡¦s jewellery, had risked herself to save Cheng by shouting, ¡§Confess! Confess quickly! They are going to take you to prison!¡¨ Even though some young people were not often agreed with the ¡§norms¡¨, they could not demonstrated opposite attitudes, as they would be attacked. Mao had taken advantage on the young people¡¦s enthusiastic trust on him and they became his political tool. Without proper judgments and ability to oppose, the Red Guards had followed Mao¡¦s instructions, often involved in violent crimes.

The impact on China from the Cultural Revolution is no less than the Great Leap Forward, the campaign that starved thousands of Chinese to death. China had suffered from a long term of economic lost by a period of lag of talents. The most of young people were only in high school levels. Additionally, citizens like Nien Cheng would still suffer from the pain of losing their loved ones. The Red Guards, who were betrayed to killed and committed crimes, might have complicated internal conflicts and guilt in the rest of their lives. Now, China is launching its economic activities in a rocket pace, however, the agony of the Cultural Revolution cannot be recovered easily. Until today, the Chinese are still living in the shadow of the Cultural Revolution. The experiences of terror and violence would be haunted back to them. Despite of the negative impacts that the Cultural Revolution had brought, one should learn from the lesson. He or she would appreciate life and their survival by respecting each other. In addition, people should perceive freedom as a valuable factor and lead China to democracy.

Edgar Allen Poe, an American writer, is one of the well renowned poets of all times. Even though he died a long time ago, his poems and short stories are still read with a lot of interest. He describes his poems with the most resplendent of imagination and vocabulary. Poe, a great poet and a critic is famous as the first master of the short story form, especially tales of the mysterious and macabre (Edgar Allan Poe, Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation). Even though after his death his literary work was questioned and debated, many American and European writers owe him a lot of credit for being their inspirational writer.

Poe has written a number of poems in his lifetime and about twelve of his poems are well known for their impeccable literary composition and for their haunting themes. It is without a question that the poems of Edgar Allan Poe apprehended the imaginativeness of its audience with their mystical imagery and fascination. Even though Poe is widely known and credited as the originator of the modern detective story and as a pioneer in the field of mystery writing, he thought of himself first as a lyric poet, and published poems and treatises on poetry (Edgar Allan Poe, Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation).

While producing his work, Edgar Allan Poe functioned primarily as a book reviewer and was successful in generating a number of criticisms in his essays. If read, it would be found that his essays are a true picture of derision, drollery and presentation of literary pretensions.

Even though Poe was a poet by his own choice, his need for finance turned him into writing short stories. It is not certain that whether Poe originated short stories or not but it is certain that he instigated the novel of detection. The Gold Bug published in 184, The Murder in the Rue Morgue published in 1841, The Mystery of Marie Roget published in 184 and The Purloined Letter published in 1844 are some of his honorary works in the sector of story writing.

Amongst his poems The Raven published in 1845, Annabel Lee published in 184 and The Spirits of the Dead published in 187 are enchanting and mesmerizing. The basic theme of all these three poems is Death. In The Raven, the despondency and the portent of death dismay the audience whereas Annabel Lee and The Spirit of the Dead are verses on the expression of sorrow on the death of a beautiful young woman and contact between man and spirits respectively. All these three poems illustrate Poe’s usage of rhythm and symbolism.

Edgar Allan Poe in The Raven is overcome by the bird raven which is symbolic of death. This poem is a dirge about the poet’s defunct wife. In the poem, the narrator seeks consolation from a giant bird whose only utterance is the dismal “nevermore”. He asks the bird many questions about his long lost love, the exceptional and luminous maiden whom the angels name Lenore. But, the only response that he hears is “nevermore”. He inquires about his love, solely with the intention of further torturing himself. Throughout the poem “The Raven”, Poe makes a personal, introverted hell strangely mesmerizing to all the readers (The Raven, EdLibrary).

This poem represents the sad conditions and losses of Poe’s life. It is said that Poe’s The Raven and his life were just as sad and eccentric. After the abandonment of his father and the disturbing death of his mother, Poe was admitted into an orphanage. John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant, later adopted him. Poe’s relationship with John Allan was not profound and it remained that way until the death of John Allan. The only person at that time who truly cared for Poe was his mother, John Allan’s wife. John’s will left him nothing, but he was struck by greater calamities after the death of his mother. The burden of all the debts because of gambling came upon the shoulders of Poe. Poe was driven into greater despair when he had to turn in an early resignation from the University of Virginia. The greatest of all the blows came when his most beloved wife, Virginia Clemn died from the same disease as his mother. It is said that, “The tragedies in Poe’s life are reflected in his poem, The Raven, and can be predominately seen through the comparison between the loss of his wife, and the narrators loss of Lenore. The apparent tone in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven seemingly represents a very painful condition of mind, an intellect sensitive to madness and the abyss of melancholy brought upon by the death of a beloved lady” (Carl MacGowan, The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe).

The audience becomes well aware of Poe’s true tone of melancholy by the coupling problems in The Raven and the repetitive verse spoken by the raven. Poe’s grief for the loss of his wife can be very well comprehended by the narrator’s anguish for the loss of Lenore. After the death of Virginia, Poe involved himself into drinking in order to quench his pain for his beloved wife. In the poem, the narrator constantly ponders whether he will see his wife after death. Poe’s obsession with drinking and the narrator asking the raven about seeing his wife again are parallelism.

“The raven tells the narrator that he will never see his wife again.

Then me thought the air grew denser, perfumed from unseen censer

Swung by Seraphim whose footfalls tinkled on the tufted floor.

“Wretch,” I cried, “thy God hath lent thee by these angels he hath sent thee

Respite respite and nepenthe, from thy memories of Lenore!

Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!”

Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.” “

(Edgar Allan Poe. Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation).

The frequent drinking of alcohol lead to the taunting of Poe into incessant despondency and eventually resulted in his demise. Just as alcohol derived Poe into a further stage of devastation, the raven reveals the narrator’s utmost fear and terror of never his wife ever again. The continuous use of some words in The Raven by the raven reflects the depressing tone in the poem. In the poem, it is important that the answers to the questions are already known, to illustrate the self-torture to which the narrator endures (Carl MacGowan, The Raven By Edgar Allan Poe). The use of Nevermore in the poem signifies the dispirited and blue state of the mind. A phrase is used in Poe’s The Raven, which impresses upon the growing tone of melancholy. This phrase accomplishes its significance via its building of cognizance of the inevitable. Knowing that the raven will answer the narrator’s entire questions with the word Nevermore, the narrator further inquires about his lost love with the purpose of torturing himself even more. He says,

“Prophet! Said I, “thing of evil! Prophet still, if bird or devil! -

By that Heaven that bends above us by that God we both adore

Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,

It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore

Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.”

Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.”

(Edgar Allan Poe. Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation).

Through this poem, Edgar Allan Poe makes his personal world of sorrow and terror enjoyable for all those who read it. The poem accomplishes very well its task of drawing its audience into the circle of insanity through Poe’s terrorizing description, mind-boggling comparison between his life and the poem, and frightful continuation of the depressing tone.

In the next poem called Annabel Lee, the narrator speaks of the early death of his beautiful young wife. Both the poems Annabel Lee and The Raven are similar in the sense that both talks about lost love. After reading the poems Annabel Lee and The Raven the audience observes that the tone and the theme of both poems is similar but the mourning style and the loss of these women differ.

Annabel Lee begins by an introduction of a beautiful woman named Annabel Lee who lives with her lover in a beautiful kingdom by the sea. Both are referred to as children and just like children, they are innocent and not bothered by the worldly concerns. Their love is describes as so pure that it associates them with heavenly couple. The scenario of the poem given by Poe gives an impression of innocence, youth, naivet and freshness. The poem relates that Annabel Lee is not only beautiful and inculpable but also she possesses the quality of a human who is unselfish, faithful and capable of a higher order of love, qualities associated with the angels in heaven.

(An Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee, http//vlc.atu.edu/engl10/00 fall/Mortal%0Love%0or%0Divine%0Communica). In the poem, Poe has shown that Annabel Lee is greatly loved and admired by her lover.

“ She was a child and I was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea;

But we loved with a love that was more than love-

I and my Annabel Lee

With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven

Coveted her and me. “

(Edgar Allan Poe. Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation).

Both shared a love that was stronger than any earthly bond. It was not just strong affection but a love, a union that could be enjoyed by angels.

Till this point in the poetry, the audience is only acquainted with the sweet romance between the lover and his beloved. After this, the audience once again encounters Poe’s madness and reinspects the part played by all the characters in the narrative.

“And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of the cold by night,

Chilling my Annabel Lee;

So that her highborn kinsman came

And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulchre

In this kingdom by the sea. “

(Edgar Allan Poe. Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation).

Poe associates the angels, who are generally known for their goodness and virtue with, envy and evil. Here the angels are referred to as kinsmen who come down to earth and take her away from her lover leaving behind her physical body to be buried in the tomb situated in the kingdom by the sea. At this point the reader comprehend a very strange notion that Annabel Lee herself was once an angel; an angel who came on earth and acquired a physical humanly body after she fell in love with a mortal. She is loved by her faithful lover and is very happy. Upon seeing this, all the other angels in the heaven become jealous of her state of euphoria and send down a chilling wind, which results in the death of her physical body. These angels then come down and bury Annabel’s body in a tomb.

“The angels, not half so happy in heaven,

Went envying her and me - ;

Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,

In the kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling

And killing my Annabel Lee.”

(Edgar Allan Poe. Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation).

Even though Annabel’s body has died and her union broken with her lover, but her lover still professes his great love to her and proclaims it heavenly to the entire world. Her lover says that even though she is not here with him in front of his eyes, her love and her memories, which no force can take away, will never die in his heart. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God An Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee, http//vlc.atu.edu/engl10/00fall/Mortal%0Love%0or%0Divine%0Communica).

Poe has used the angels as a source to separate Annabel Lee from her lover and to dissuade man from loving God.

The audience towards the end of the poem realizes that Annabel played an intermediary role between man and God. Even though her existence has ceased to exist, her lover still feels her close to her heart and refers to her as his darling, his life and his bride. The angels can never cause the death of Annabel from her lover’s heart.

“ But our Love it was stronger by far than love

Of those who were older than we

Of many far wiser than we

And neither the angels in the heaven above,

Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.”

(Edgar Allan Poe. Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00 Microsoft Corporation).

In the last part of the poem, Poe seems to give a message to the audience; Annabel Lee’s soul still reaches to her lover metaphorically through the moon and the stars. Here a comparison is made between love and moon and stars; these heavenly bodies are unchanging and never dying love never ceases to exist. Through this, Annabel and her lover become successful in vanquishing death, distance, time and all the powers that separate them from each other.

“For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise but I fell the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so, all the night tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling my darling my life and my bride,

In the sepulchre there by the sea,

In her tomb by the sounding sea. “

(Edgar Allan Poe. Encarta Encyclopedia ã Encarta Encyclopedia ã 1-00

Microsoft Corporation).

Even though the poem starts with a romantic description of the couple and then gradually becomes haunting, it once again shows Edgar Allan Poe’s state of despair and melancholy. The poem is successful in revealing his obsession with lost love and death. Hence, the theme of Annabel Lee and The Raven is the same in the sense that both deals with lost love. Even though Annabel Lee is not as haunting as The Raven, it is found to be very dark and disturbing and not generally liked by many readers. From both these poems it can be assessed how disturbed Poe’s life must have been and what trauma he lived in each day.

In the third poem written by Edgar Allan Poe called The Spirit of the Dead, the poet once again discusses the terrorizing fact of life, death. All of Poe’s poems are based upon this theme and the tone in all of them is haunting. Any reader can very well understand that Edgar Allan Poe was a lonely man. The Spirit of the Dead is divided into five parts of different length. The following five lines in the poem give the haunting thought and idea of the poem,

“ Be silent in that solitude,

Which is not loneliness - for then

The spirits of the dead, who stood

In the life before thee, are again

In death around thee, and their will

Shall overshadow thee; be still”

(The Spirits of the Dead, http//www.jeannepasero.com/spirits.html).

In the poem, Poe reflects an idea that spirits were always linked to his soul and the presence of these spirits is silent and still. This notion of stillness, silence and haunting forms the major part of all Poe’s poems. The poem seems to reflect no message but only torture for the poet as he visits the grave and the spirits visit him, both colliding into one another in silence.

What the poem and the poet have in common in this poem is memories. These memories are revoked as the poet visits the graves. Memories themselves are like dreams of the past, a ghost that always lingers around every human being. These memories are obsessing and oppressing.

“Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,

Now are visions neer to vanish;

From thy spirit shall they pass

No more, like dew-drop from the grass.”

(Spirits of the Dead, http//www.jeannepasero.com/spirits.html).

About Poe’s poetry, it is said that, in all his poems, he has shown a dual attitude, from ease, the poem’s scenario turn into terror, from where there is no escape and no compromises can be made. Poe’s poems are like a glass through which only darkness and hurt can be seen, which formed the reality of his life.

Hence, all of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems show the uneasiness of his soul. The basic theme in all of them is estrangement, childhood naivet, death, hopelessness and the great losses involved in love. A writer, D. H. Lawrence once wrote that, “Poe was an adventurer into the vaults and cellars and horrible underground passages of the human soul. He sounded the horror and the warning of his own doom (Work of Edgar Allan Poe Conclusion, Edgar Allan Poe). His poems are a complete scripture of his life and the pain he endured after loosing his mother and wife. But, no matter how haunting or terrorizing these poems might prove to be, they definitely reflect Poe’s brilliance and honesty in writing.

The tones of all these poems show portray a dark supernatural vision mixed with the elements of authenticity, caricature and travesty. The main reason for this is the instability and insecurity of relations that Poe experienced in his lifetime. The technique, which Poe used, was very much imitated in the late nineteenth century. His use of symbols and images to suggest rather than state the complex of ideas and emotions that he wanted to communicate is far closer to modern poetry than to the poets that immediately followed him. His influence can be seen in the movement known as imagism, which flowered in England in the early twentieth century and which, emphasized the purely pictorial in poetry (Work Of Edgar Allan Poe Conclusion, Edgar Allan Poe).

Poe believed that unusualness was an essential ingredient that composed beauty. The characters in these three poems show that they are greatly hid behind darkness, terror of death and the real world of colors and hope. In the poems, a sign of hope is nowhere to be found. A message that death is a part of life and time heals all wounds is invisible in all the three poems. Theme of death conquering life and lost hope is spread in the poems. The Gothic environment and the domain between life and death are not simply decorative. The characters all proclaim to be brave and show their terribly disturbed soul.

The notion worth mentioning in all these poems is that they all portray romantic primitivism. In all of his poems, Poe delves the mind and the subconscious. To explore the exotic and strange aspect of psychological processes, Poe delved into accounts of madness and extreme emotion. The painfully deliberate style and elaborate explanation in the poems heightens the sense of the horrible by making the events seem vivid and plausible (Kathryn VanSpanckeren, The Romantic Period, 180-1860 Fiction Edgar Allan Poe).

Poe’s poetry had remarkable influence on the French and the English. They were very much moved by The Raven. The author of Poe’s Biography, Baudelaire wrote, “the French took Poe as their literary model, and Poes influence is obvious in The Flowers of Evil. In the latter part of the century Poes influence passed over to England to inspire Aubrey Beardsley and Oscar Wilde” (Work Of Edgar Allan Poe Conclusion, Edgar Allan Poe). The use of symbols and images by Poe suggest his complex state of emotions and notions.

As a result of such writing techniques, Poe reputation suffered greatly. Even though he is considered as a great lyric poet, he is not much appreciated by modern poets. Modern poets believe that Poe’s poetry does not possess the feel of hope or any topic, which they can speak on to the present generation. He is considered to be associated with drugs and with a psychological misbalance of mind. It is said that Poe wrote poetry in order to relieve his pain; the pain that he suffered because of losses in his life. From the three poems, it is obvious that Poe was greatly in love with his wife and could not overcome her death. Though haunting, one cannot stop wondering about the despair Poe went through because of his attachment to his love. If the meanings of these three poems are carefully analyzed, it is only heartbreaking to find out the grief caused when our loved ones are taken away by death. With terror, these poems are also paralleled with the ideas involving the great bonds of love. In all the poems, it can be seen that Edgar Allan Poe was a devoted lover of his wife and was actually heartbroken after she left him. Hence, this is the main reason of the same theme in these three poems. Hence, the theme and the tones of these poems is sad.

The motive behind Poe’s poems is to cause the character to struggle between good and evil, between his conscience and between death and loss. Edgar Allan Poe was considered to pose a morose imagination. Hence, all these factors contribute in maintaining a similar theme, horror and death in all the poems. Around 1855, it was said that Poe moved about the earth with a think luminous cloud wrapped around him that kept him away from worldly concerns. His poetry opens an intriguing world of terror for his readers. Poe’s obsession with death was not simply the depressed theory of an impossible uncontrolled depressive; he believed that the longing for death was basically a longing to return to primitive uniqueness of God.

Just as the readers were fascinated with Poe’s poems, they were also fascinated by his death. To many people, his death still remains a mystery. He was in a comfortable state in the hospital, but he constantly moved temporarily in and out of consciousness. It is said that, after saying “Lord help my poor soul”, he passed out. A great controversy still exists around his alcohol theory. It is known that he started drinking after the demise of his wife. It is still not sure whether he died of alcoholism and poor nutrition diet or some disease. His death is just as enchanting as the death of his characters in his poems.

Hence, it can be concluded that Edgar Allan Poe was a poet who was overwhelmed with somber and depression. Maybe his sad state took his life away. The theme in the three poems discussed above is the same and is maintained in all of his work. The literary talent, which lied within Poe, is beyond any argument and has been a great inspiration for many writers. Even though the main theme of his poems is death and the tone sad and depressing, his work truly represent a true picture of art and of the state of love after it has been lost. It only shows the poet’s thinking and state of mind and the ways he was tortured by the sad events in his life. These three poems can also be read through a psychological point of view of what a man goes through as a result of insecure relationships in his life.

As You Like It

One of the many reoccurring themes in As You Like It is romantic love. The book gives many examples of love that is expressed dramatically and at some points magnified. Many relationships throughout the book reflect the meaning of romantic love. The play explores the structures and forms of love. Each character has their own thoughts and feelings on romantic love and express it in their own way. It [love] is to be all made of sighs and tears (5..74)

Rosalind and Celia have a relationship that is unique and they express their love for one another in a different way. They are described as to sharing a love “dearer than the natural bond of sisters” (1..44) and “never two ladies loved as they do.” (1.1.7) They show their care for each other in action. When Rosalind is banished by Duke Fredrick, Celia says that in banishing Rosalind, Duke Fredrick, has also banished Celia. She announces that where Celia goes she will follow. “She (Celia) would have followed her (Rosalind’s) exile, or have died to stay behind her.” (1.14-5)

Though they seem like they have a good relationship they must become separated before they can learn to love properly, and become independent women. Celia at the beginning of the play is lost. She is not able to survive without Rosalind. One of the reasons for banishing Rosalind is to force Celia to become her own women and depend on herself and not Rosalind.

Duke Frederick tells her, Thou art a fool. She [Rosalind] robs thee of thy name (1..74). In they play he seems to be the only one to realize that Celia needs to grow up and the way of doing this would be to get Rosalind out of the way. The forest actually serves to separate them and in the end allowing them to end up independent.

The main couple in As You Like It are Rosalind and Orlando. They both have different views on love. Orlando thinks that true love is when you’re with the person you love and you can’t live without them. Rosalind thinks that if Orlando really did love her and appreciate her he would spend every minute with her.

Orlando professed his love for Rosalind by running around carving poetic verses admiring Rosalind into trees all over the forest. The behavior in which Orlando acts is traced back to romantic love, in which he longs and reaches out for a perfect and unobtainable woman. Rosalind finds his poetry to be horrible and lacking seriousness. She can observe the poor worth of the poetry and it shows that she witnesses the odd things love encourages.

This is Rosalind’s first step away from her protected life in the court. She must risk everything in order to advance her love. Duke Frederick made it easier for her when he banishes her now she has nothing to lose. She is able to leave the secure court system and enter the woods and eventually win Orlando as hers.

In this play nearly every character is in love with someone. Love is expressed though deep speeches and characters openly professing love for each other. What makes it romantic love is that somebody can fall madly in love with a person and marry him or her the next day. This shows that there is no doubt in their love for each other and it intensifies the meaning. These parts in the play make it seem less real but make it more impressive.

Romantic love is a unique emotional state of intense excitement, great calm, or enhanced well being in the presence of the other (Liebowitz, 18). Each character no matter how they express their love they all come back to that definition. The play shows many situations, which are good examples of romantic love and makes the book seem more real.

The case study we saw was on Forms of Business ownership. A man by the name of Richard Davis started a company in the 170’s called Second Chance Body Armor. He started this company on the fact that he was working at a pizza shop. While working at this pizza shop one night he was robbed.

This robbery brought out his spirit of social need. He started his armor company with seventy dollars and a pair of scissors. He tested the vests comfort. He also tested to make sure the vest worked. He made these vest out of ballistic nylon. The way he proved that the vest would save policemen’s lives or anyone else’s life is by shooting himself one hundred and seventy times.

The first year of his business was a little hectic. He was not organized. But now he is organized and has a bookkeeper. He was the leading company in his the 170’s.he even took out the seatbelts of his car to help improve his product.

He put out his first add. This add cost him six hundred and sixty dollars. He didn’t have the money but he got it some how. This add received the largest single response. He also wanted to use color for his brochure covers. This also cost him; the brochure’s put him down to his last dollar. For his brochure cover he wanted to put something about sex and violence. By putting this on his cover it worked for him business sales started to go up.

Being your own boss is great there is no one ceiling above you. There is also no one telling you what to do or how to do things it’s your choice. But in order to start your business and have success in your business you have to help someone. In Mr. Davis’s case he helped save the lives of policemen and common people.
